This is a soft palate before surgery in a brachycephalic patient (French Bulldog). 🩺
In many flat faced breeds, the soft palate can be too long and/or thick, partially obstructing the airway and making it harder to breathe. A soft palate resection (staphylectomy) removes the excess tissue to help improve airflow and reduce airway obstruction.
For brachycephalic patients, addressing an elongated or excessive soft palate can help with breathing, exercise tolerance, heat regulation, and overall quality of life. It may also help reduce signs such as loud breathing, snoring, gagging, and exercise intolerance.
