🐱 A New Hip for Toby! 🦴✨DAY 1 POST-OP 🤯

Meet Toby, a 1.5 year old Domestic Shorthair who came to HVS with a chronic fracture of his left femoral head and neck, resulting in a painful, dysfunctional hip.


Rather than removing the damaged femoral head (FHO), Dr. Raske & our surgical team performed a micro total hip replacement (THR), replacing the damaged joint with a miniature prosthetic hip designed to restore normal joint function and preserve natural biomechanics.

While total hip replacements are more commonly performed in dogs, this advanced procedure can also be an excellent option for cats like Toby!

💙 Our goal: Eliminate pain, restore mobility, and give Toby the opportunity to return to a comfortable, active life.

Meet Scruffy! 🐾 This 4.5-year-old Aussiedoodle suffered fractures in both bones of her right foreleg after being struck by a cyclist 🚴

🔩 Dr. Matthew Raske and the HVS surgical team performed a complex fracture repair using two orthopedic locking plates to restore alignment and stabilize both bones 🦴

💉 Our anesthesia team, led by a board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist, also performed a brachial plexus nerve block to provide targeted pain relief during surgery and recovery ❤️‍🩹

With both bones stabilized, Scruffy is now on the road to recovery. We’re rooting for you, Scruffy! ❤️🐶

It was a pleasure welcoming Dr. Kazushi Asano and colleagues from Nihon University in Japan to HVS New York for a day of surgical observation and collaboration.

Their team joined us for a full procedure day, observing our surgical and perioperative workflow while exchanging ideas and discussing their clinical and research work being presented at this year’s ACVS Surgery Summit.

Whether a patient needs orthopedic, soft tissue, or minimally invasive surgery, our team remains focused on providing specialized surgical care while working closely with pet owners and referring veterinarians throughout every step of the process.

🎓 Saint has officially graduated!

After staged bilateral total hip replacements, this 1½ year old German Shepherd is officially entering her new hip era. 🐾✨

Two new hips (fully healed), a fresh start, and plenty more adventures ahead. 💙

We’re excited to welcome Dr. XiaoXiao Lederer to the Hospital for Veterinary Surgery team!

A native New Yorker, Dr. Lederer brings advanced training in both orthopedic and soft tissue surgery. She earned her DVM from The Ohio State University and continued her surgical training at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center, the University of Florida, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Her clinical interests include minimally invasive procedures, reconstruction, and microsurgery.
Dr. Lederer is passionate about thoughtful, collaborative care and working closely with pet owners and referring veterinarians throughout the surgical process.

⚠️ CONTENT WARNING: GRAPHIC SURGICAL CONTENT

Yogi, a 7-year-old Bernedoodle, presented with a lung mass underwent a minimally invasive VATS (video assisted thoracic surgery) partial lung lobectomy for removal.

Minimally invasive thoracic surgery like this is changing what’s possible for our patients. Proud of Yogi and the whole team.

We used the Arthrex NanoScope (NanoNeedle) a needle-sized camera only about 1.9 mm in diameter with chip-on-tip imaging and a wide 120° field of view. That tiny scope means smaller incisions, less tissue trauma, excellent visualization in a tight chest space, and more precise instrument control.

The result for Yogi: less pain, a faster bounce-back, and she went home the very next day. She’s healing beautifully.
