It's World Rabies Day!

On July 6, 1885, Louis Pasteur successfully administered the first rabies vaccine — a milestone in preventing a deadly zoonotic disease.

That’s why July 6 is now recognized as World Zoonoses Day, a reminder that protecting animal health and human health are deeply connected.

For veterinary teams, zoonotic disease prevention is not limited to one diagnosis or one conversation. It shows up in preventive care, patient history, infection control, client education, and the everyday routines that help protect pets, families, and teams.

A few things to keep front of mind:
🐕 Zoonotic risk is not just a rabies conversation. Think leptospirosis, brucellosis, MRSP/MRSA, and dermatophytes, especially in dogs with an unknown vaccine history or neurologic, urinary, or hepatic signs.
🐈 Healthy cats pose very low zoonotic risk to healthy people, but immunocompromised clients — including young children, older adults, pregnant people, and immunosuppressed individuals — may need clearer guidance.
🧼 The highest-leverage intervention is still routine preventive care: vaccination, parasite control, safe food handling, and hand hygiene for the whole team.
🌎 One Health starts with prevention and veterinary teams play a critical role in helping clients understand how everyday care can protect the whole household.
