Meet - Irving.

Hairless. Scabby. Bloody. Underweight, and so very, very tired.

Meet Irving, a sweet Italian Greyhound who somehow found himself wandering the streets alone, scared, and suffering in a body that has been crying out for help. We may never know who is responsible for this torture, but we thank our lucky stars that he somehow made it out of whatever hell he was living in and into our arms.

Irving is suffering from a severe, untreated Demodex mange infection. A condition that, when addressed early is a quick, non expensive, painless fix. Instead, this little boy was left to suffer until his skin became raw, his wounds began bleeding, and his entire body became a heartbreaking reminder of what happens when medical care doesn't come.

And yet, somehow, through all of this, Irving hasn't given up on humanity.

His little body is covered in open, painful, oozing wounds, but his heart? That sweet little heart is still willing to trust. Beneath his initial shyness and uncertainty is a boy who wants snuggles, offers the sweetest kisses, and is still capable of showing us the very best of what dogs are made of.

That's the thing about dogs. They keep loving us, even when we've given them every reason not to.

Irving doesn't understand why he was neglected. He doesn't know why his skin hurts or why his body has been left to suffer. He only knows that someone finally reached out their hands, wrapped him in a blanket, and promised him that things would be different.

And at Rugaz Rescue Inc., we intend to keep that promise.

We cannot change what happened to Irving before he found us. We cannot erase the pain he has already experienced. But together, we can make damn sure that his story doesn't end here.

Saving Grace.

Grace walked into the shelter as a "stray." Everything about her body tells us she was never just a lost dog.

When Grace walks, she hunches over, and you can see how curved her spine and hips are. That kind of curve doesn't come from one bad week. It develops when a dog is confined for very long stretches of time, or grows up that way. We believe Grace spent most of her life locked in a crate, and that she would have died in there if she hadn't gotten out. This wasn't bad luck. Someone did this to her and now she's suffering the life-long consequences.

Grace is shockingly an adult bully breed dog who weighs only 14.5 pounds. Her Body Condition Score is 1 out of 9, the lowest score there is. It means her body has almost nothing left. The rest of her tells the same story. Her nails are so overgrown that they've changed the way she stands. Her coat is stained with urine from living in her own waste. Her paws have dropped from prolonged malnourishment and confinement. She has an open pressure wound on her hip, the kind that forms when a body is too thin to cushion itself against a hard floor. Even her teeth are discolored from malnutrition.

A dog this starved can't just be handed a full bowl of food. She needs a carefully monitored refeeding plan so her body can safely handle nutrition again and monitored closely for refeeding syndrome which could be deadly.

She'll also need x-rays and an orthopedic assessment of her spine, hips and paws to understand what years in a crate have done to her body and what rehab she needs to walk comfortably once her organs are past the shock period.

No living being should under go the horrors Grace has seen in her short life, it is our mission to make sure the rest of her life is shown that the humans she knew were not what our species are all like. She deserves this at the very least.

Professional Snuggler. Part-Time Superhero. Full-Time Good Boy.

Zorro is a youngster bully whose snuggle game is every bit as big as his smile. What he may lack in legs, he more than makes up for in heart — and apparently, absolutely no understanding of the concept of personal space.

Because according to Zorro, personal space actually translates to “snuggle space.” 😂

This boy has perfected the highly advanced commando crawl → dramatic flip → BELLY RUB DEPLOYMENT maneuver, and honestly, it's one of his greatest accomplishments. Why walk normally when you can crawl directly into someone's lap and roll over for maximum belly coverage?

Zorro may not exactly be the sharpest tool in the shed, but that's okay. The second you need him, he throws on his imaginary cape and comes flying to your side faster than you can blink.

He's loyal. He's loving. He's ridiculous. He's ridiculously loving.
