🌈Happy Pride from your favorite le***an farmers!!

That’s a wrap for our season at markets! We’ll be back in August with more super gay veggies 🌶️🥕🧅🫑🍆 and ducks 🦆🌈 Yardbirds Farm

For us, being q***r farmers doesn’t just mean that we’re le***ans growing veggies. We try to honor the legacy of the LGBTQ+ movement in how we run our business. This means paying fair wages, doing our best to take care of the land and the people who work it, feeding our community healthy, nutritious food, and being advocates for better policies to make all that possible. Queerness is first and foremost a rejection of the status quo. We strive to embody the legacies of those who made it possible for us to be out here, visible, living our lives and doing this work.

Time to crimp that sunn h**p again!

This is the first time in awhile that we have a successful enough stand of sunn h**p to crimp and plant into, which is something we’ve been experimenting with since we got a SARE grant three years ago. Today we crimped sunn h**p cover crop that was seeded in late April and will be planting winter squash into it in a few days. The idea is to have the stalks slowly decompose on the bed tops, creating a living mulch to help keep down w**ds. Summer w**d pressure is INTENSE out here, so we need a strategy that doesn’t involve too much labor and adds to the soil at the same time. We never plant into black plastic so this is an interesting alternative approach that can work great when it works.
