🐾 MEET TRUMAN — OUR UP-AND-COMING STUD! 🐾

We thought it was time to introduce you to a very special boy and an exciting part of the future here at Joyful Golden Retrievers… Truman!

Truman was imported from Serbia, and we couldn’t be more excited about this handsome boy.

Health is one of the most important parts of our breeding program, and we’re proud to share that Truman has completed and passed all of his health testing. That’s an important milestone before any dog becomes part of our breeding program.

But his health clearances and handsome looks are only part of what makes Truman special.

His temperament is really what makes us love this boy.

Truman is incredibly confident, happy and comfortable wherever he goes. He approaches life with that wonderful Golden combination of curiosity and confidence, and he genuinely loves being around people.

And it seems the feeling is mutual—everyone who meets Truman loves him.

He has that special personality that just draws people to him. He’s friendly, affectionate and always seems to have that big Golden smile on his face.

These pictures pretty much sum him up.

Truman absolutely LOVES his wilderness walks. 🌲 Give him a trail, some woods to explore and plenty of things to sniff, and you’ll see that smile get even bigger.

But there is one thing that can make that smile disappear in a hurry…

🐿️ A SQUIRREL 🐿️

Then it’s all business.

Every tree must be investigated. Every squirrel must be located. And apparently, standing on two legs to get a better look is completely reasonable when you take your job as Chief Squirrel Inspector as seriously as Truman does.

One minute he’s sitting on a rock looking like he belongs on the cover of a Golden Retriever calendar…

The next minute he’s trying to figure out exactly how squirrels manage to climb trees.

Beautiful. Healthy. Confident. Happy. Adventurous. People-loving. And definitely squirrel obsessed.

We’re incredibly proud of the boy Truman has become and so excited about his future here at Joyful Golden Retrievers.

Until then, Truman has squirrels to find. 🐿️🌲

🐾 DON’T FORGET ABOUT DAD… 🐾

Harper may be doing the majority of the work raising Bo & Luke right now, but there’s another member of this little family who has taken his role pretty seriously…

💙 Dad Yadi 💙

One of the sweetest things to watch over these past two weeks has been how attentive Yadi is to Harper and their boys.

You can often find him lying near the whelping box, quietly keeping watch over Harper and the puppies. Other times, his attention is completely focused on Harper—checking on her, staying close to her and simply wanting to be wherever she is.

It’s almost as if he has appointed himself head of security for the Duke boys.

While Mama naturally provides the nursing, warmth and constant care newborn puppies need, Yadi has found his own place in their little family.

And what I love most is watching the relationship between Harper and Yadi.

Harper is comfortable with him nearby. Yadi respects her space. He isn’t pushy or intrusive—he just seems to understand that his job right now is to be close, be calm and keep an eye on everyone.

Not every mother dog wants the sire near her newborn puppies, and that always needs to be respected. Any interaction should be based on the temperament and comfort of the individual dogs and carefully supervised.

But for Harper and Yadi, having him nearby feels completely natural.

Soon enough, Bo & Luke will be walking, playing and discovering that the big handsome guy who has been quietly watching over them is actually Dad.

And I know Yadi is going to LOVE that part. 💙

For now, though, he’s perfectly content being Harper’s companion and standing guard over his two little good ol’ boys.

Mama takes care of the babies. Dad takes care of Mama. And together, they make a pretty special team. 💓🐾💙

🐾 TWO WEEKS OF BO & LUKE! 🐾

Our two good ol’ boys are officially TWO WEEKS OLD, and things are starting to get a little more interesting around here!

For the first two weeks, Bo & Luke’s world has been mostly about Mama Harper, milk, warmth, sleep and each other. But now we’re beginning to see some pretty exciting changes.

👀 THEIR EYES ARE OPENING! 👀

Those tiny little eyes are just beginning to peek open, which means Bo & Luke are getting their very first glimpses of the world around them.

Their vision is still blurry and will continue developing over the next several weeks, but there is something pretty special about seeing those little eyes looking back at us for the first time.

👂THEIR EARS ARE OPENING, TOO! 👂

Puppies are born with their ear canals closed, so for their first couple of weeks the world is essentially silent. Now their ear canals are beginning to open, and they’ll gradually start hearing the sounds around them.

Soon they’ll begin noticing our voices, Harper moving around, household sounds and, of course, each other!

We will start to introduce new sounds gradually as their hearing develops, giving them plenty of time to adjust to this suddenly much bigger—and noisier—world.

🐾 THEY’RE ON THE MOVE! 🐾

Well…sort of.

Bo & Luke are becoming much stronger and have officially entered the scooting-around-the-whelping-box stage.

Right now, it’s a combination of crawling, scooting, pushing with those little back legs and occasionally trying to get all four feet underneath them.

They’re definitely not walking yet—but you can see their bodies figuring it out a little more every day.

Over the next week, we’ll watch those wobbly movements become more coordinated as they begin learning to stand and take their first real steps.

It’s amazing to think about what is happening for them right now. I am so fortunate to get a front row seat!

🧡💙 DID YOU KNOW? 🧡💙

Our two good ol’ boys are changing right before our eyes!

One of the sweetest little transformations happening with Bo & Luke right now is the changing pigmentation of their tiny noses and paw pads. 🐾

Golden Retriever puppies can be born with noses and paw pads that look very light pink because the pigment isn’t fully developed yet. During the first days and weeks of life, melanin production increases, and those adorable pink noses and little pink toe beans gradually begin to darken.

With Bo & Luke, we’re already watching the change happen! Their noses are beginning to develop darker areas, and their paw pads are slowly changing from soft baby pink to darker pigmentation. 🖤🐾

It doesn’t necessarily happen all at once, either. You may see little spots or patches of darker pigment appear first, almost like someone is slowly coloring them in. Over time, those areas can continue to fill in and darken.

It’s such a small detail, but it’s one of our favorite parts of watching newborn puppies develop. Every day brings a tiny change—more pigment, a little more growth, and one step closer to those eyes and ears beginning to open.

Like everything else during these first few weeks… they change way too fast.

🧡💙 JUST TWO GOOD OL’ BOYS 🧡💙
🐾 4 DAYS OLD! 🐾

There’s nothing but happy news from Joyful Golden Retrievers!

🧡💙 Our little Dukes of Hazzard Dynamic Duo — BO & LUKE — are officially 4 days old, and these two good ol’ boys are doing exactly what puppies should be doing… eating, sleeping, snuggling, and growing! 💙🧡

Mama Harper’s milk has come in, the boys have full little bellies and are content, and most importantly, Harper is doing great! We are so proud of our sweet girl and how beautifully she has settled into caring for her boys.

We’ve also started Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) with Bo & Luke.

So, what exactly is ENS?

During the first few weeks of life, a puppy’s brain and nervous system are developing incredibly quickly. ENS involves a series of very brief, gentle exercises and sensory experiences designed to introduce puppies to mild, controlled stimulation during this important developmental period.

Each day, Bo & Luke spend just a few seconds experiencing gentle handling exercises that include tactile stimulation, different body positions, and brief exposure to a cool surface. The entire process takes only a few minutes and is always done carefully and gently.

ENS is intended to provide small, age-appropriate challenges during this early stage of development. It’s part of our intentional puppy-raising program, with the goal of helping puppies become confident, adaptable and resilient as they grow.

For us, it’s one of the many little things we do from the very beginning to give our puppies a thoughtful start before they eventually head off to their forever families.

So far, life for these two is pretty simple…

 🦴 Eat well 🦴
💤 Get lots of sleep 💤
 🧡 Snuggle with Mama 💙
🧠 Do their daily ENS 🧠
 🐾 Repeat 🐾

Something tells us it won’t be long before Bo & Luke are getting into a little Hazzard of their own!

For now, we’re soaking up every minute with these two precious boys.

Bo & Luke — 4 days down and a whole lot of adventures ahead.
