Erin Mathieu Photography Pet photography in the Central MA area. I am a Massachusetts based photographer who has always had a passion for animals.

In college, I studied Animal Science and Wildlife Conservation while working at various farms and assisting at a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. I filled my spare time with animal related activities such as horseback riding, showing sheep and maintaining a hobby farm of sheep, goats, chickens and pigs with some of my friends. In the years after graduation, I worked as a large animal vet tech, bre

d horses, and then took on a job managing a large flock of sheep. It was from this sheep farm that I adopted the inspiration for my photography, Reba. Reba is a tri-colored Border Collie who absolutely hates having her picture taken. Photographing Reba became a challenge of figuring out ways to get quality shots where she actually looks like she is having fun. The key has been to use activities that Reba enjoys, such as playing fetch and herding sheep, to distract her from the fact that she has a camera pointed at her. I am now focusing on capturing lasting memories of pets for others. I also spend as much time as possible helping local dog rescues by photographing adoptable dogs and I also taking pictures of animals at zoos for the Zookeepers who care for them.

Aaaaannd Cooper. This little pudge is not available anymore, but the last time I checked his sister still was. Cooper's mama looks very much terrier and his dad wasn't around when mama and pups were found. I know for sure he's a puppy, but he was so calm and sweet that it was very deceiving. If you're interested in adopting a Cooper-ish pup, check out Victoria Cox through Survivor Tails Animal Rescue

I needed this... I went for a quick drive after work today to take some pictures of adoptable pup Rocky. As soon as I walked in to Rocky's foster home he melted into a little puddle of pet my belly. To me, this boy looks very much ShibaIbu/Fox/SomethingElseWithShortHair. He is so beyond sweet and gentle that I don't expect him to be in foster care for much longer. Rocky is smaller than I expected him to be, but with longish legs.

Rocky is available for adoption through Survivor Tails Animal Rescue!

Michael Kane & the Morning Afters played a damn good set at Ralph's Rock Diner this past weekend. They have a handful of shows lined up for the near future, so everyone should find one close to home to check out.

I plan to finish going through the rest of the pics from this show, but wanted to share some of my favorites first. I'm very conflicted about concert photography... I love going to shows, but it's a whole new experience trying to take pictures of moving subjects while you have no control over the lighting. I know a bit more about the venue now, so I'm sure to improve the next time around I guess...

Birding is tough. It's hard enough to find the birds to photograph, but even when they are waiting on top of the visitors center when you drive up, it's still a challenge. When Amy and I arrived for our annual Snowy hunt this ball of fluff and talons was waiting where we could clearly see him as we drove up. And there was already a decent crowd of photographers stationed across the lot. We did our standard of trying to take a couple pics from the car in case he flew away and we miss our chance. Then get out and get all of our equipment and setup right outside the car to take a few more pics in case he flew. And the toughest part of deciding what to bring... It's always a battle of tripod or no tripod. If he sits then the tripod is necessary for sharp pics (especially in some of the wind we've had to battle), but if he flies we might not be quick enough to track him. We went with tripods to start and settled in. (I actually took a bit longer than Amy to settle, because I was too scared to move across the parking lot and miss a flight. A couple texts later and I was confident enough that there was a spot I could move right into, so I went).

An hour later we had zero movement and frozen fingers. We overheard stories from the neighbors about how they had been there for hours and they met others who were there for hours before them and little fluff hadn't moved a muscle all day. So now we are even more worried that he's going to make a move and we might miss it.

We FINALLY decided to move on and see if we could find the short-eared owl that lives in the area. I ran into the visitors center for a too slow minute and missed the first flight (of course), but Amy got it.

We hiked on and didn't see much worth photographing, or at least much we had a view of to photograph. Back to the Snowy (who hadn't moved the entire time we were gone) and set up shop again minus tripods. Not long this time and we got another flight. That's when all 140 photos taken earlier in the day go in the trash and the few from the last five minutes are what make the cut.

This past weekend I attended (and photographed) my second favorite wedding ever...after my own of course. My younger brother got married at the Inn at Pleasant Lake in New Hampshire and I am so glad I forced myself and my camera on him and my new sister-in-law. The Inn was the perfect setting for a wedding, even in the winter. I seriously can't say enough good things about it. The staff is wonderful, the chef is a genius, the Inn is cozy and toddler friendly. I had big plans for the photos I wanted to take throughout the day that I had to tweak and tweak again. More guests arrived and we lost the sun, but it really didn't matter. I'm so happy for Dennis and Sarah. The entire weekend was really just perfect.
