Lately, I’ve noticed a growing trend of AI being used in ways that I believe are harmful to responsible breeding. While AI can be a useful tool, it should never be used to alter a dog's structure, color, expression, or other characteristics in photos. Misrepresenting dogs through edited images creates unrealistic expectations and makes it more difficult for puppy buyers to make informed decisions, which is already hard enough!
I’ve also seen an increase in breeders claiming that their dogs are fully health tested, when in reality, the opposite is true - even among programs that may appear reputable at first glance.
In today's digital world, it's easier than ever to market a breeding program. Unfortunately, it's also easier than ever for important details to get lost behind polished photos and clever advertising.
Before committing to a puppy, take the time to do your research. Verify health testing through publicly available databases, review pedigrees, ask questions, and learn about the breeder's goals, practices, and priorities. Organizations such as the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) can be valuable resources when confirming health clearances. This is a public database and so easily to use! Type in the dog's registration name in the search bar and it should automatically generate health testing that has been reported to their database.
A pretty picture may capture your attention, but transparency, health, temperament, and ethical breeding practices are what truly matter.
Responsible breeders should welcome questions, encourage education, and be willing to provide documentation that supports their claims.
