Rusty’s first time seeing marks from a remote launcher 🚀

We’ve primarily retrieved placed dummies to this point and will continue to mostly retrieve placed dummies for a while. But it was fun to get the winger out and see how he responded to watching dummies fall from a different angle.

Fern’s first day retrieving off the launcher since she was about 3 months old 🚀

She’s been ready for this for quite some time. But we’re in no rush. We’ve laid a solid foundation for Fern to this point. Now that she’s beginning to mature into a real desire to work, we are beginning to get a little more serious in the field.

The cuddles, the play, the noise, the being carried around everywhere… it’s all part of growing up here. And I truly believe it’s one of the best things we can give them before they go home to you.

Experiment with Rua

Rua is 16 months and has never been exposed to picking up a bird or feathers in any way - Until today! I don’t advise taking a dog out to pick birds on a hunt without exposing them to at least picking up cold birds. But I will say it is unnecessary to let your 4-6 month old retriever chase and catch live birds before they know how to actually retrieve to hand 🙃

This is an example of trusting the genetics and training that you’ve invested in. I didn’t need to create a crazy desire in Rua to chase and pick up feathers at 4 months old. The genetics did that for me. I did need to invest in our relationship and develop a real desire to work with me, though.
