Dexter crossed the rainbow bridge last week. Even at 14, after two years with heart failure, he still loved running around his backyard. More naps, but always that puppy energy. He could turn “not a dog person” into a dog parent and changed so many minds about pit bull-type dogs. He made fostering possible, welcoming so many dogs into our home. We’ll remember him running around the yard, being everyone’s friend, and making room for one more. Run free, buddy. We still can’t picture life without you. Our hearts are broken 💔

Take it from a lifelong dog mom, breed is only one piece of finding the right dog.

I love my pit bulls. I love my German Shepherds. And I’ve learned that two dogs who look similar on paper can need completely different things from their families.

So if you’re searching for a rescue dog to adopt, don’t just ask, “What breed do I want?”

Ask: What energy level fits my life? How much training can I realistically provide? How long will my dog be alone? Do I need a dog who can live with kids, cats, or other dogs? What behaviors am I prepared to work through?

That’s the thinking behind Pet Protect & Connect. We look beyond the photo and the breed to help surface rescue pets whose needs actually align with an adopter’s life.

September is Happy, Healthy Cat Month!

Cats are experts at hiding when something isn’t quite right. That makes staying proactive about their health especially important. 💜

A few simple ways to keep your cat happy and healthy:

🐾 Keep up with regular vet visits
🎣 Make time for interactive play
🌳 Add cat trees, shelves or window perches for enrichment
🧩 Try puzzle feeders to engage their natural hunting instincts
💧 Keep fresh water available and encourage good hydration
📱 Use a tool like the mypetwellnessapp.info to help keep track of your cat’s health and wellness between vet visits

Happy, Healthy Cat Month is also a good reminder that cats aren’t “low-maintenance” pets. They’re intelligent, social animals who form deep bonds with their people and deserve the same attention to their physical and emotional health as any other member of the family.

It’s been a while since Charlotte made an appearance around here. 💜🐾 So, a quick reintroduction.

Charlotte survived parvo, cruelty, and neglect in Texas. She had a litter of puppies who were never found. Somehow, through all of it, this girl kept going.

She made her way to Connecticut and proceeded to build herself quite the life.

She now has THREE homes she considers hers, multiple humans wrapped around her paw, and a fan club that continues to grow.

Basically, Charlotte went from surviving to running a small real estate empire.

This is what rescue can look like.
