Have you ever arrived somewhere and realized you had a passenger you didn’t know about?

Trent went to pick up a load of hay today to bring back to Milan Center. After getting loaded at the farm he did a walk around to check the load and shooed off a hen who had decided to check the trailer out. After making sure everyone was off the trailer he got in the truck and headed to Milan Center.

When he arrived he walked to the back of the trailer and boy was he surprised… there was a hen happily sitting on the trailer after a nice ride down the countryside!

Thankful that the hen did okay with the unknown journey, he got her some new, more secure accommodations and she rode around with him for part of the day before getting returned to the farm this evening.

The family was very happy to get her back as she is about 3 years old and one of the farm favorites.

So the lesson for today is, chickens are very quick to jump up on trailers. Never turn your back or they may just tag along!

Important Information for Indiana Livestock & Pet Owners

The USDA’s recent announcement regarding New World Screwworm (NWS) is a good reminder for all Hoosiers to stay vigilant. While this pest is not currently in Indiana, it can easily be brought into the state by people or animals returning from infested areas.
The Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) has been working for over a year alongside the Indiana Department of Health and DNR to prepare a strong response. New movement restrictions are now in place for animals traveling to Indiana from affected areas.
What should you watch for?
Unusual flies or maggots on livestock, poultry, or pets.
How to help control flies on your property:
• Clean up manure regularly
• Use fly repellents and baits
• Consider a feed-through fly control product
