Sniffing
One if the most undervalued, underappreciated, underutilized and most important skills that all dogs need to have access to.

How long should we let them sniff?

How do I stop them from sniffing this or that?

How do I keep them from ripping my arm off when they go back to sniff something?

Why would you stop them?
The walk is for the dog. Casual mindful walks are more beneficial to our health than a power walk.
Unless the object is dangerous and your dod is known to snarf something up, let them choose to sniff or walk on.
- more often than not our own reactivity to perceived threat of them grabbing it actually leads to the dogs increased attention to said object.

How much leash do you provide for your dog to move around naturally while on walks?
- dogs should have plenty of leash (6-8 ft) to move around and investigate.
If they only get enough leash to stay close to your side they have no choice. They are being dogs and the short leash creats and yanking and whiplash.

Tig here is on a long line with length managed. Its important to have both hands on the leash when working in public that requires management of the length for changing conditions.

Notice how he had to bounce Back to double check a sniff much like you have to scroll back up on your Facebook because you neded to be sure of what you saw.

Do you struggle giving medication or supplements to your pup?

Many families do!

Being a vet tech i have seen so many scenarios. One of which a dog pilled successfully bring med up on will from its stomach!

So when I first plan of Olympic treat tossing failed I had to have a plan B.

Fawning the Frick over Clover when she let me pill her!

I started with her prevention. She prefers not to taste them. So I break them in half(they are huge! 50 # bravecto and sentinel) and play the mouth game.

I taught the mouth cue as a separate behavior and then paired it with pilling.

Regardless, every single attempt is reinforced.

And Reinforced very heavily!

This week she had to start antibiotics for a skin thing thats been going on.

There was no tension in her jaw and she even opened it a little for me!!! So proud of this girl!!.

If you woulf like some help in teaching your pup how to take medications please reach out! Every pup is an individual and this approach may not work for everyone.

If your pup has extremely strong feelings about thr whole thing, do not attempt without coaching. Forcing a dog to do something against their wishes is very dangerous.

Cats too!!

Another lesson in the raw!

Practicing and applying the cue word "Shoulder"

Its been a few days because I've had many late nights. Tonight's no different but I put sessions off for a while.

Clover and I started where we left off in session one where she was just starting to understand what I was looking for.

Once she seemed to understand the plot to this story (shoulder to hand) I applied the cue word.

Its so fun to watch her body language change throughout or session.

This is behavior #2 for out Bluff Check skill.

I am debating on getting front and shoulder blended before I start behavior #3.

My thought is that if I stick to two skills at a time it will reduce the chance of co fusion. So get Shoulder and front mixed together so that I can have one whole behavior and the new 3rd one to teach and build.

Stay tuned, more to come!!

Training evolution

Starts with structured sessions
- brief times of "this is the skill"
- " This is how you do it"

Evolves into
- Still watch length of sessions
- "This is where you need it" in as many applications as you're life and routine require it

Evolves again
- "Show me what you've learned"
(This in my opinion is the most crucial because this is the phase where you stop telling your dogs, what to do and start reinforcing what they're choosing to do)
- reinforcements is not always food, it's crucial to know what your dog's preferences in joy are as well as the conditions that you're doing these exercises
- crucial, to understand your dog's capabilities,Your capabilities and the environment

This Video:
I have rules on how Clover 🍀 plays fetch. These rules are we don't just throw the ball and she runs out after it. This condition of play teaches clover to go.Go go and all she does is increase in her arousal and inability to focus and regulate.

I saw her ability to play this game appropriately after a friend played fetch with her. She lost her ability to relax until I gave her the release.
After one game with the friend, I have to go back to the beginning.Just to remind her.
That looks like I wait for her to do the behavior if I have to remind her just once, and I don't toss the ball very far.Because the further the ball goes, the higher her arousal goes
The longer she waits for the release, the high river arousal goes.

I was very relaxed with my friends with play. And now I have to put strict rules if anybody wants to play this game with her.
My instructions are important to me.And for her, so if these rules can't be followed, then I don't permit play with anybody else.

It may be petty, but this pleads into her other abilities. In our day to day like her ability to remain focused and for arousal low when out in the yard amongst squirrels.

Skills with our dogs are never just in that specific condition. Because there's always going to be some other aspects in their life that these skills plays a part that we may not be aware of which is equally an. Awesome and exciting tidbit, because as long as you're training these skills teaching these skills and practicing these skills regularly in generalizing them where they pop up might pleasantly surprise you.

Expectations

Yours vs your dogs

We always at any given point in time have certain expectations of our dogs. Even of ourselves in relation to our experiences with our dogs.

Are we conscious of these expectations?

Or

Do we robotically go about our days just expecting things to be?

To be conscious of our expectations we have to understand what we are looking at with behaviors we want and the outcomes of those behaviors in relation to our pups.

What about expectations of ourselves?

Do we hold that just as accountable?

What are our expectations of our behavior?
Our intention going into an experience.
Our actions withing the experiences and adjustments throughout those experiences.
Our projected or expected outcome concluding an experience?

What about our expectations to short term and long term goals for our pups.

This park is a park that clover gets as much choice as possible in her chosen activities.
Past experiences is she plays with her bestie, hikes and plays in the forest and fields and play frisbee or ball.

These are her expectations when she identifies where we are.

Today my expectations override her and she wants not prepared or as effective in My chosen activity.

My expectations for this adventure is to alive her as much choice to her expectations as I can while adjusting the activity that this specific park means to her.

My goal to to help her adjust her expectations to the equipment we use from the location.

The canicross equipment hopefully will allow her to adjust her expectations and help us both have a great time!

Trust
Something that is earned
Something that is cherished
Something once broken takes a lot of work to repair.
A result of mutual understanding
Something that you only see when you respect and acknowledge another's choices

Early on I learned and understood that Cagney is not a snuggle me kittly.

I dont pick him up because I can and he's soft.
When he lays on me, it is not an invitation to pet.
I talk to him and create predictable situations and experiences so that he understands life in my home.

Clover has been a helper pup for Eevee for a couple of months now.

She is helping Eevee with social confidence and getting her out and active to keep he muscles strong.

Clover and I are on and off with Canicross because things just get in the way.

Last night we introduced Eevee to Canicross. She absolutely loves running!

Though its not either of us humans favorite past time we love to run with our pups.

After a year off Clover hopped right in and was ready to suit up and get going!!

Canicross is a sport to do with your pups that really love to run or even walk. Its a great way to gdt.out and enjoy time in nature with your pups and stay healthy.

Canicross can be great for reactive pups like Eevee.

Its important to be sure you don't start your pups with this amount of physical work until their body is done developing. Which provides plenty of time to work on foundational life skills.
