As the teperature outside begins to drop you may think you can refrain from protecting your pet(s) from parasites. Parasites are a year-round threat to your pets and your family. While it's easy to think of fleas, ticks, and worms (including heartworm - from a mosquito bite) as just a summer problem, fluctuating temps and indoor heating mean they can thrive in your home all winter long. Many parasites' life cycles allow them to lie dormant for months, only to re-emerge when conditions are right. For example, roundworm and hookworm eggs often remain dormant in soil, water, and organic material until conditions are favorable. Even strictly indoor pets are at risk since bugs can easity hit a ride inside on your clothes.

To keep everyone safe, year-round protection using vet-approved preventatives is the best approach -- natural remedies and seasonal treatments usually aren't enough to get the job done. ,

Hot weather can become dangerous for dogs much faster than many people realize. Help keep your pup safe by walking during cooler parts of the day, making sure there's always plenty of water available, avoiding hot pavement, and keeping their coat in good condition for natural cooling.

Watch for warning signs like excessive panting, thick drool, weakness, vomiting, or collapse.

Please don't leave your pet in the car while you shop! Car temperatures can rise very quickly in the summer, as well. Maybe you think it won't matter for only a minute or so, but you'd be surprised how quickly your dog can get overheated in a car. Let's strive to keep our pets healthy in this hot, humid weather.

New World Screwworm has recently been detected again in the United States, so it's a good time for veterinary teams and pet owners to know what to watch for. This parasite can lay eggs in open wounds, and once the larvae hatch, they feed on the surrounding tissue. Without prompt treatment, this can lead to swelling, pain, infection, and serious damage to the affected area.

Pets and other animals with cuts, recent surgery, bite wounds, healing belly buttons (in newborns), or those without regular parasite prevention may be at higher risk. We can help by encouraging you, the pet owner, to check wounds regularly and seek veterinary care if a wound gets worse instead of better, develops a bad odor, or has visible larvae.

While we are on the subject of bbqs, please don't feed your pets table food -- no salty snacks or fatty foods. No onions or garlic and no corn on the cob!! And watch out for desserts - chocolate, xylitol (sugar substitute), and grapes/raisins are all very dangerous for pets. And remind your guests not to feed them, too!! The bangs and booms of fireworks are very upsetting to most pets. Keep an eye on open doors when your guests come and go. July 4th is the most common time for your pets to run out the door in fear. Play some music to drown out the sound of the fireworks and do what you can to keep them calm. Keep them safe and have fun!๐Ÿ”๐ŸŒญ๐Ÿซ“๐Ÿฅจ๐ŸŽ‰

Did you know the days surrounding the Fourth of July are one of the busiest times of the year for lost pets? Fireworks can cause even the calmest dogs and cats to panic and run.

Be sure to pick up any medications your pet may need before the holiday, and donโ€™t forget to check that their microchip information is up to date. A registered microchip with current contact information gives your pet the best chance of making it back home. โค๏ธ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’™ And remember -- keep you and your pets hydrated in this heat! Have a safe and happy July 4th!

July 4th Fireworks will be starting tonight around Clarkstown. PLEASE take precautionsto keep your pets safe. Close windows, play music = anything = to distract them and mask the loud booms and bangs. We know they are fun to watch for humans, but for animals -- not so much. Also watch the food that your pets pick up. All the food we bbq and we enjoy is not all good for your pet. Ask your guests not to feed your pets and keep an eye on food that may fall to the ground. Have a safe and fun hoiday weekend!

Something to ask of you...We need towels! if you have any towels you no longer use we would greatly appreciate that! They can have holes or be stained. As long as they are still useable....The animals sleep on them and for some reason, we are running low (we need to replace ones that have been shred or have holes!). THANKS!!!
