Marcato German Shepherds American show line German Shepherds bred for utility. We train and participate in a number of venues, including conformation, herding, and agility.

Marcato German Shepherds specializes in American show lines that are functional and utilitarian. Our focus is on the whole dog, not just the show ring. While we do exhibit our dogs in conformation, we realize that is only one piece of the puzzle, and take great pains to produce animals who can do more than run in a ring. We work to title our animals in various performance venues in addition to conformation. Those venues include herding, agility, obedience, and tracking. Whether you want a show dog, performance dog, or are looking for a lovely companion to stroll with you around the block, we do our best to provide the public with an animal that can suit those needs. Our dogs are screened for hip and elbow dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy. Pedigrees are linked to all dogs posted in the albums, and copies of health testing can be provided upon request. Animals with permanent health testing are linked on their pictures. If there is no link to their health testing, they are too young to be tested and results will be provided when they are old enough. EDUCATION TIME!

Too many of you don’t know what raising a litter looks like and you need to ✨shut up✨about it.

I’m not going to be nice about this. I’m tired of the perpetual ignorance and lack of critical thinking skills that are prominently on display from others.

A longtime Borzoi breeder had a litter stolen from her property. The puppies and their mother were in a secured fenced area. Somebody felt entitled to trespass on the property and steal what wasn’t theirs.

This is not the breeder’s fault.

If you are a reasonable person with any understanding of the nuance of risk, you won’t have trouble grasping this. If you think that the person who was victimized bears the responsibility of the Bad Thing, you’re a victim blamer, pure and simple.

The comments I’m seeing about this theft are the height of idiocy.

“They were unsupervised!” Your dogs are unsupervised when you go to work. Shut up. They were in a secure area on the property, not roaming loose in the neighborhood.

“They have no business being outside at five weeks old! They don’t even have vaccines!” Breeders have s**t to do. We have a puppy area to clean. We have a house to clean. We have errands to run. We have jobs to go to. Dogs need time outside.

Puppies have their first set of shots on board around that age and they aren’t leaving their property. They need enrichment and to see more than the one area they were born in. My puppies go outside for the first time af 4-5 weeks. I set up an ex-pen, put their mother with them, and go inside to clean up their room. I’m able to check on them through windows.

Somebody actually called this backyard breeder behavior.

Delusional. It’s normal breeder behavior.

I have a puppy party at 6-7 weeks and invite buyers and trusted friends over to socialize babies and do evaluations. My puppies leave the property at 8 weeks to go to TSC and be microchipped. I spray a cart with disinfectant and drop ‘em all in.

Too many people have become germaphobes and cannot separate acceptable risk and precautions from “this will kill them!” The idea that it is unsafe to let puppies outside on your own land is ridiculous.

Acting like the victim is the problem is fu***ng weird. They did nothing wrong. They did nothing unreasonable. Somebody else did something terrible to them and you’re blaming them for their own mistreatment.

Again I’ll say you’re fu***ng weird.

A bunch of you judging this breeder would 100% blame a woman for being assaulted, or someone for getting carjacked. The person to blame becomes the person who was wronged because it bothers you to know you could be in the same position. If you pretend you can control every variable and every action, then you get to stroke your ego and tell yourself you make better decisions.

You don’t. You haven’t become a statistic yet, that’s all.

We take risks every day of our lives because that’s what life is. We aren’t even cognizant of it.

You drove to work? Guess it’s your fault if you get hit. You were driving a car after all. Shouldn’t have been doing that.

Choked on your lunch? Well, f**k you for eating. It was a terrible choice.

Fell down some steps? Ah. Shoulda stayed upstairs and had somebody bring you what you need.

This inability to accept that bad things happen to people without them being at fault is nonsensical and it enrages me every time I see it. Calling someone who has dedicated the last 40+ years of their life to showing and breeding animals a BYB because she put puppies outside for a while is why the animal rights loonies are winning. You’ve bought into their ludicrous rhetoric without even realizing it.

You cannot demand well rounded, well socialized puppies while also believing putting them outside for a couple hours is unethical. This behavior is a major reason I do not have a desire to breed any longer.

You should be ashamed and embarrassed.

I am so sorry Sandra lost her puppies. And I am disgusted by those of you who think you’re too good to be a victim of anything.

Stop sucking so fu***ng much.

He is ball obsessed (also loves fizbee). Works real hard for it, will happily search forever looking if need be. Ball is life.

He is not a couch potato. Hobi needs to *do* something. He would not be well suited to a lazy person.

He’s extremely biddable. Very easy to handle physically. Walks on a loose leash, even when ahead of you. I took him to see sheep and while he was super keen, he was incredibly light in my hands on the long line.

No resource guarding, up to date on shots, neutered. Crate trained and housebroken. Rides well in the car whether he is crated or loose.

Hobi needs a home. He’s from my Soul Eater x Bubbles litter and will be 6 next month.

A home as an only dog or one that has a female counterpart is necessary. He does not tolerate other males in the house. He is ok with older children (12+).

High energy dog, very active, really loves to play ball (never tires of it). Needs an experienced owner who isn’t looking for a social butterfly.

He is neutered and up to date on shots. Easy keeper (so easy he’s had to be on a diet, recently).

I’m saying goodbye to Soul Eater tomorrow. I made the decision a week or so ago, and I know it’s the right one. It doesn’t make me feel any less sick, though.

I get asked “How do you know when?” I wish I could give you specifics. There just happens to be a moment, typically after I’ve taken a picture, when I can see they’re tired. That tiredness tells me it’s coming soon. I saw it with Strauss and I saw it with Monkey.

He’s still eating. He’s still wagging his tail. He’s still barking at the cats.

He also falls down. He slips. He struggles to potty without falling over. He’s down to 80 pounds due to muscle wasting. I can grab his entire shoulder blade like a handle when he lays down because there’s no muscle coverage.

Unlike Strauss, he was not amenable to any sort of sling. And even if he was, I will not allow my dogs to get to the point of true suffering. It is always better to let them go a day early than a minute too late.

Soul Eater is going to get the good death his sister was not afforded. They all deserve a good death whenever possible.

It is highly unlikely I will post here when he goes. I may not post for a while at all.

Thank you to all who have ever admired him and loved him, whether from afar or in person. He has deserved it all.

Today marks the 12th birthday of my very first litter. A litter that was conveniently born in the middle of a sweltering summer day. A textbook whelping.

That litter of nine produced four (almost 5) AKC champions, one UKC champion, and, most importantly, nine wonderful companions with an immeasurable amount of memories.

Of the nine, three still remain. Soul Eater, London, and Max. Today they are getting treats, cuddles, and of course, an abundance of love.

I’m so incredibly grateful they are still around. Especially Soul Eater. I have never, and likely will never get over the loss of his sister. He and Creeper were my wonder twins, and I miss her goofiness every single day.

Thank you, Wesson, my Honey Doll, for the gifts you gave me. Happy birthday my lovelies. I will treasure your memories as long as I live.
