Marcato German Shepherds

Marcato German Shepherds American show line German Shepherds bred for utility. We train and participate in a number of venues, including conformation, herding, and agility.

Marcato German Shepherds specializes in American show lines that are functional and utilitarian. Our focus is on the whole dog, not just the show ring. While we do exhibit our dogs in conformation, we realize that is only one piece of the puzzle, and take great pains to produce animals who can do more than run in a ring. We work to title our animals in various performance venues in addition to con

formation. Those venues include herding, agility, obedience, and tracking. Whether you want a show dog, performance dog, or are looking for a lovely companion to stroll with you around the block, we do our best to provide the public with an animal that can suit those needs. Our dogs are screened for hip and elbow dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy. Pedigrees are linked to all dogs posted in the albums, and copies of health testing can be provided upon request. Animals with permanent health testing are linked on their pictures. If there is no link to their health testing, they are too young to be tested and results will be provided when they are old enough. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

This is going to be real boring if you’re not interested in conformation, but this is what getting show ready looks like. It’s not glamorous. It’s often boring. Sometimes it looks pretty ugly. But these little sessions add up.

Training doesn’t have to be long. It has to be effective. You can get a lot done in 8-10 minutes.

You’ll see her decide there’s something in the grass the last couple minutes (there isn’t). She drops her head into the collar to try and get to food that doesn’t exist, and you can see me working the tension out of her neck (supporting her jaw and tipping her head up and down) while reinforcing that she’s been told to leave it alone.

She understands what’s being asked of her, but she’s a sentient creature. She makes choices. Sometimes those choices are wrong 🤷🏽‍♀️

Reinforcing the right ones reduces those occurrences.

Here’s a rare shot of Kohaku standing four square. I know people lacking in knowledge would positively comment on her “flat back” while they would malign her if they saw the stack picture first.

She is not “standing normally” in the first photo. Four square is not normal for a GSD. Three point is. A correctly built dog will stop standing three point more often than not. I have very few pictures of my dogs standing four square because of this.

One dog, multiple silhouettes.

Her structure doesn’t change. How she’s set does. The type of silhouette I present depends on the judge.

Working the free stack with Kohaku. She’s known the cue to stand for a while now. This type of work is about impulse control and holding that stand, something that has been historically hard for her.

“Why do you continue to show if there are so many racists?”

Anti-Blackness isn’t regional. It’s global. It is not isolated. It is worldwide. Being in America, where the racism is sewn into the very fabric of the nation, there is no hobby available where racism isn’t prevalent. Even things like cosplay. We can’t even dress up as fictional characters without hearing, “Hinata isn’t Black.” Well, she gonna be Black today.

A year and one week ago today Nottaway plantation burned to the ground in Louisiana. Black people rightfully celebrated. White people lamented the loss of history and architecture. They mourned the loss of a *wedding venue*.

A house that held Black people prisoner was used as a space of matrimonial celebration by white people. That mattered more to them than the abused souls who had no choice but to live there. We are still viewed as less important than a damn house.

To add insult to grievous injury, when told that enslaved people would’ve been the ones to build that house, white people vehemently denied it. They said there’s no way they would possess that level of craftsmanship. Really? The people who were forced to do every bit of labor possible didn’t have the skills for building?

Those white people refused to hear the truth the same way they refuse to listen to me about judges like Desmond Murphy. It’s staring them right in the face and they will not acknowledge it. A kennel club didn’t even want to remove the noose (you read it right) from their club logo because “It wasn’t for Black people, the town hung criminals.” It’s weird and wild anybody ever thought that was appropriate in the first place. Who uses an ex*****on method as a logo for a dog club???

Calling out this behavior would be a necessity regardless of the hobby, because white people will not acknowledge wrongdoing on their own. Some don’t see it because they’re ignorant and pay attention, others see it, like it, and refuse to change, and still others see it, dislike it, but care more about their own comfort and success than they do progress.

The entire civil rights movement was about forcing that acknowledgment and accountability for it. The current presidential administration is doing everything it can to roll back protections for BIPOC (and q***r) people. RFK Jr. says Black children with ADHD need to be sent to “re-parenting”camps. We’re “over prescribed” medications. Funny, since we’re less likely to receive a diagnosis at all (especially girls…I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 36).

The majority of racist judges I know are breed specialists, meaning that it is far more feasible to tell people not to enter under them. They only judge one breed. They’re easy to avoid. This is not the case for any multi-breed, multi-group judge who happens to be a bigot. These judges save clubs money because they cover so much of the panel. Saving money is a necessity in this current economy. It shouldn’t take precedence over weeding out bigots, though.

Black people deserve to have hobbies. We don’t deserve this constant resistance to change, nor the persistent dismissal of our concerns. We’re allowed to be upset and speak on it. And we are allowed to have a “tone”. White people are going to think we have one regardless, because they can’t help but feel attacked when they have that brief flash of recognition that they’re part of the problem. Instead of processing it, they make their hurt feelings our fault.

If you feel annoyed, off-put, or any negative sort of way about reading this, imagine how I feel living it? Because I have to consider all of these things as a Black breeder and exhibitor. I don’t get to put blinders on about it.

I am not begging people to be better. I am demanding it.

So far I’ve had white people rescind active support (willingness to report) because they got in an argument with a different Black person, a person telling me I’m the one sowing division, and of course, people telling me I’m unhappy and to find something to do.

Conformation has been my “something to do” for 25 years. My unhappiness is treated as invalid just like my anger. I am not allowed to display any sort of emotion that doesn’t evoke the façade of harmony and compliance.

Why wouldn’t I be unhappy with racism? What is this expectation of tolerating such bad behavior? They’ll police my behavior, but not that of the racist.

I’ve had a white boy (in his late teens at the time) be comfortable enough to tell me he had seen Song of the South and insist to me that enslaved people were happy and loved their masters. I’ve had my former Junior, Sena, (who is Black) be chased down by a white woman after her dog pooped on the way to the ring.

I told Sena I would clean up and to get where she needed to go. This woman had the audacity to ignore me when I told her I was handling clean up. She tried to go after a child to make her do what she thought was correct. I almost caught a bench hearing that day. Because I have done the *same thing* with white Juniors I’ve helped, and nobody batted an eye.

There is this entitlement white people have about controlling our bodies that they’re often not aware of. That’s how deeply engrained it is in society. When I call it out, they get mad. They don’t want to be corrected. Allyship is conditional, and that condition is maintaining their comfort.

I cannot and will not maintain their comfort. That gets us nowhere. Discomfort is a requirement of growth. Many of them choose to wither and shrivel rather than be watered.

I am not sowing division by calling out racism. People who allow the racism to perpetuate are. An uncomfortable truth is still true.
