A released balloon doesn't just vanish. It falls back to Earth eventually, and that's when the real problem starts.
The balloon material and its string become debris that wildlife can't distinguish from food. Birds, sea turtles, and marine mammals get tangled in the ribbons or swallow pieces, leading to intestinal blockages, internal injuries, and starvation. NOAA has found balloon debris over 1,000 meters down in the ocean—a few seconds of celebration traveling that far.
If you're decorating for something special, secure your balloons or skip them entirely. Reusable decorations do the job without the long-term cost to animals that have no choice in the matter.
