🐍 Snake Bite Season Is Here — Keep Your Pets Safe! 🐾
Warm Texas weather means more outdoor adventures… but it also means snakes are active again. Curious dogs (and sometimes cats) love to sniff and investigate, which is why most bites happen on the nose, face, or front legs.
In our area, pets most commonly encounter rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths (water moccasins). Even a single bite can quickly become a life-threatening emergency.
⚠️ Signs your pet may have a snake bite:
• Rapid swelling (often around the face or leg)
• Sudden yelping or pain while outside
• Puncture wounds that may bleed or ooze
🚨 If you suspect a snake bite:
• Keep your pet as calm and still as possible
• Do NOT apply a tourniquet or try to remove venom
• Get to a veterinary clinic immediately
⏱️ Time matters. The sooner treatment begins, the better the outcome.
🌿 Tips to reduce snake encounters:
• Keep grass and brush trimmed in your yard
• Avoid letting pets explore under rocks, woodpiles, or dense shrubs
• Use a leash when walking near trails, tall grass, or water
• Stay extra alert at dawn and dusk, when snakes are most active
