This morning I talked about what shows up on the ground during fall walks.

Mushrooms deserve their own post. Many in your yard are harmless, but some are toxic, and you cannot tell which is which by looking. Even people who know mushrooms well have trouble telling them apart.

If your dog eats one, do not wait to see what happens. Call your vet, or call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 (a fee may apply). If you can, bag what is left of the mushroom or take a photo.

Fall walks have more on the ground than summer walks.

Acorns are everywhere right now, and they can upset a dog's stomach or get stuck in their throat. Mushrooms can come up overnight after a rain, right in the middle of a yard that was clear the day before. And a dog can always grab something faster than you can say, "Leave it."

On a fall walk, the ground needs as much attention as the dog does.

We pay attention to these details. We’d love to walk your dog when you need a professional dog walker in New Bern.

This morning I talked about how an empty bowl in a multi-cat house does not tell you who ate.

That is why I want the details for each cat, not just the household. I want to know who eats where, who finishes fast and goes looking for more, who is on special food or medication the others shouldn't get into, and who guards the litter box and makes everyone else wait.

With one cat, a sitter can get by with less information. With three, those details tell you whether everyone is actually okay.

When you need someone you can trust to care for your pets, call us at (252) 635-2655 or visit crockettscrittercare.com.

In a house with one cat, an empty bowl tells you breakfast happened.

In a house with three cats, it does not tell you much. One cat might have eaten their share and somebody else's. Another might have skipped the meal and gone to hide. You would never know from looking at the bowl.

Multi-cat homes need a sitter who can tell your cats apart and knows how each one eats. If you have more than one cat and need care while you are away, give us a call at (252) 635-2655 or visit crockettscrittercare.com.

This morning I talked about dogs that fall apart on leash because they want to reach another dog.

A fence or a front window can do the same thing. Your dog can see the dog walking by, the person on the bike, the squirrel on the lawn, and cannot get to any of it. So they run the fence line or bark at the glass.

In a way, a leash is a barrier too, just one you are holding. That is why the dog who goes off at the window is often the same dog who goes off on the walk.

If you have a dog that gets worked up and it's difficult to calm them down, give me a call. I want to help. (252) 635-2655 or visit crockettscrittercare.com/services/dog-training.

Some of the loudest dogs on a leash are the friendliest ones.

They see another dog across the street and start barking, whining, and pulling like they are ready for a fight. Put them in a different setting, and plenty of them would just want to play.

That is frustration. The dog wants something and can't get it; all that wanting comes out as noise. From across the street, it can look like fear or aggression, which is why people so often misread these dogs.

If your dog loves other dogs and still falls apart on leash, I can help! Let’s talk. Call (252) 635-2655 or visit crockettscrittercare.com/services/dog-training.

This morning I talked about ACE Free Work and how much it can show us about a dog when we step back and let them explore on their own terms.

People have asked me what it takes to become a certified ACE Free Work trainer. The training is intensive, and it doesn't stop with the first or second certification. In a few months, I start another year of work toward my next certification, and I'm excited to keep learning.

ACE Free Work is good for dogs of all types. Reactive dogs and shy dogs, yes, but also puppies still figuring out their bodies, seniors slowing down, and the everyday family dog who could use a calm way to think and settle.

ACE Free Work sessions are available in New Bern. I am the only certified professional ACE Free Work Trainer in NC and would love to meet your dog. Call (252) 635-2655 or visit crockettscrittercare.com.

Some dogs walk the long way around the kitchen to avoid the tile. Some hesitate at the top of slick stairs, or will not step onto the scale at the vet's office.

People usually call that stubborn or quirky. Often, it is about footing. A dog that doesn't trust what is under its feet will be careful where it puts them.

ACE Free Work gives dogs a chance to meet different surfaces on their own terms, with nobody asking them to cross anything.

Does your dog have a spot in the house they will not go? Give me a call; let’s talk about how ACE Free Work can help.

This morning I shared a question one of my employees asked me: Why do cats drop their toys in the water bowl?

What I find just as interesting is what happens next. Some cats carry toys over on purpose, drop them in, and walk away. Some fish them right back out. Some only do it with certain toys, or always use the same one.

Each of those says something a little different about that cat.

So now I am curious. Does your cat put toys in the water bowl, and what do they do with them afterward? Tell me in the comments.

One of my employees asked me a question recently. Why do cats drop their toys in the water bowl? I love that my employees notice details like this, stay curious, and ask questions!

There probably is not one answer. Some cats may be carrying their prey back to a safe spot, the same place they eat and drink. Others may just like what happens when the toy gets wet. It floats, it sinks, it smells and feels different, and suddenly it becomes a brand-new game.

The behavior may look the same from one cat to the next, but different cats may be doing it for very different reasons.
