There is a little claw partway up your Labrador's leg that most people never think about. 🐾 It is called the dewclaw, and it is essentially the remnant of a thumb, a leftover from a distant ancestor that walked on more of its foot.

Far from being useless, those front dewclaws often earn their keep. Many Labs press them into the ground for extra grip when turning at speed, and they use them like a thumb to hold a bone or a favorite toy steady while they chew. 💛 Watch closely and you will spot that little digit working.

It is one of those tiny details that connects our modern retrievers to millions of years of evolution, hidden in plain sight just above the paw. 🔍 The body of a Lab is full of quiet history like this.
