LibertyLand Axolotl Rescue LLA is the first 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit axolotl rescue in the US.

Our mission is to educate the public about proper axolotl care, and to rehabilitate and responsibly rehome axolotls in need.

Clear the Shelters may be over, but our local‑pickup‑only crew is still here doing their little wiggle dances and hoping for nearby homes. So for Labor Day Weekend, we’re keeping the $50 adoption fee in place for axolotls who can’t be shipped safely.

These are the seniors, the medical‑recovering goobers, and the “please don’t put me in a box and mail me” types—the ones who really benefit from calm, in‑person pickup.

NOTE: To take advantage of the discount, applications must be submitted between 12:00AM ET Saturday, Sept. 5th and 11:59PM ET Monday, Sept. 7th.

If you’re local, have a cool, cycled setup ready, and want to make an axolotl’s whole week, this is a great time to reach out. We still have 7 waiting for the right nearby keeper.

Real talk, people.

🌤 The summer months can be hard for axolotl parents. Temperatures rise, water evaporates faster, humidity increases, and water quality becomes more difficult to maintain. People that brought home an axolotl in colder months may face the realization that keeping an axolotl tank consistently cool isn't as simple as they originally thought. As axolotls are exposed to higher temperatures for longer periods of time—or to temperatures fluctuating between too warm and just cold enough—health issues like fungus and opportunistic bacterial infections start to crop up.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬.

𝐄𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬; families take vacations, kids are home from school, and overall capacity for maintaining additional foster axolotl tanks and tubs drops.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭. We’re seeing more axolotls needing help at the exact time when fewer homes are available to take them in. Our waitlist grows, emergency intakes spike, and we’re forced to triage which animals we can safely accept. Some of these axolotls are sick, some are overheated, and some simply have nowhere else to go.

𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭.

You don’t need a huge setup. You don’t need to take on multiple animals. A cycled tank or a simple tub with clean, cool water is enough to give one axolotl a safe place to land.

One foster spot = one axolotl off the waitlist.
One foster spot means we can say “yes” to the next emergency.
One foster spot genuinely changes the math for us during the hardest months of the year.

If you have room for just one, we’d be grateful—and so would the axolotl who gets that chance. 🫶

👏 🎉 Congratulations to our latest adopted axolotl, Romano!
It's bittersweet to see this guy go...

Many of you may recognize this handsome gentleman as one of our MBD pilot project participants. Now that Romano actually has visible bones (most recent radiograph is on the left, initial intake rad on the right; thank you Dr. Stella and 12 weeks of MBD treatment!), he's ready to be loved by his forever family.

Thank you to Jeff from Lakeville, MA for giving this lovely goofball a happy home where he'll be able to thrive and live the life he deserves. 🫶

Thanks to Romano and several of his siblings, we now have a much better understanding of how to prevent and treat metabolic bone disease in axolotls. Enjoy your new life, little dude—you really do deserve it!
