Thinking about adding alpacas to your farm or family?

It’s an exciting step, but one that comes with real responsibility. Alpacas thrive in a herd environment and should never be kept alone. Starting with three or four helps them feel secure, social, and at ease.

They rely on you every day for proper shelter, fresh food and water, routine health care, and ongoing management. Their care doesn’t pause for weekends or vacations—and with a lifespan of 20+ years, it’s a long-term commitment worth planning for.

Since we have been involved in the alpaca industry for 17 years we are passionate about its past, present and future. Check out this documentary that is in the works.

What if the alpaca holds the key to our future? Life Is Better With Alpacas is a cinematic journey into the mystical Peruvian highlands where connection, tradition, and the growing tensions between ancient wisdom collides with a modern world in overdrive.

Why is alpaca softer and not itchy like wool....take a look.....

FUN FACT FRIDAY! 😉

Why alpaca fibre is less prickly than sheep’s wool. 🤓

👉 Alpaca fibre has very smooth handle. This is partly due to the scale structure (or cuticles) of the fibres that protrude less from the fibre shalt than those of sheep. This means that the fibre feels less prickly when wearing!

Compare each of the fibre types shown in the illustration… Polyester fibres and silk are super smooth (towards the right) while on the left you can see that coarse wool fibres have very prominent scales protruding from the surface of the fibre. Finer wool, although it has a smaller diameter fibre, still has much more prominent scales than alpaca or cashmere. On this photo, I think alpaca looks smoother than cashmere…?

Anyway, now you know why many people who can’t wear wool can wear cashmere or alpaca. I’m one of them! (Lanolin is another part of the story…but we’ll save that for another day…)

Why should you wear alpaca??? Natural fibers like alpaca are generally better than synthetics (polyester, nylon, acrylic) due to superior breathability, comfort, and environmental benefits. They are biodegradable, renewable, and eco-friendly. Unlike synthetic materials, which are petroleum-based and release harmful microplastics, natural fibers offer better temperature regulation, moisture-wicking properties, and fewer toxins for the skin.
