In August, teams from the Essex County Turtle Back Zoo, Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute and Nashville Zoo joined forces in an exciting multi-institutional effort supporting the Clouded Leopard Species Survival Plan (SSP).
Ahead of an upcoming animal transfer, veterinary and animal care teams collaborated to implant cutting-edge biologgers in two clouded leopards. These small internal devices track critical physiological data, offering unprecedented insight into how these elusive cats respond to habitat changes, travel, and daily routines.
The data collected will feed into a larger, comprehensive study aimed at elevating welfare standards, refining care protocols, and optimizing future transfers for clouded leopards across AZA accredited zoos.

CAPY-tivating waters! 🤩

Brie and Andouille are enjoying their brand new pool! Capybaras are semi-aquatic mammals that have several adaptations to make them great swimmers. Their nostrils and ears have specially evolved to seal shut to keep water out of them. They also have webbed feet and can hold their breath up to 5 minutes at a time.

Get CAPY for some big news 🗞️

Our new mixed-species South American habitat opens Friday, Sept. 4, just in time for your Labor Day weekend visit (and yes we’re open on Monday 😉)!

The habitat will be home to capybaras, giant anteaters, common rheas and crested screamers. Capybaras and crested screamers will debut this weekend. The giant anteaters and common rheas will be introduced gradually as they acclimate to their new home.

This exhibit features designs to reflect a South American native environment, including artificial termite mounds, a renovated pool for the capybaras and anteaters and naturalistic landscaping.

By bringing compatible species together, this habitat offers a more dynamic experience for both the animals and our guests. The exhibit’s space illustrates the interconnectedness of species within ecosystems and allows us to tell a more complete conservation story for all of the animals that now reside in the new exhibit.

Jane has served as an ambassador animal with the Zoo since 1999! You can see Jane as she chooses to participate in our Wild Works Animal Shows daily. These large African birds are known for their cream-colored casque that allows them to project their voice.

These little ones recently found a permanent home at Nashville Zoo after being illegally taken from the wild and sold into the pet trade before eventually being rescued by law enforcement.

We’re humming along with local conservation efforts! 🐦

Join Southeastern Avian Research at the Historic Farm on Sunday, Sep. 6 from open until noon to watch hummingbirds being banded and learn how this research helps track their migration and population trends.

Here are three simple ways you can help hummingbirds at home:

🌸 Plant nectar-producing flowers or with careful use of a feeder
📱 Join a citizen science project like Hummingbirds at Home
💦 Provide a water source, such as a fountain, sprinkler or birdbath with a mister

*All banding is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey's BBL.

A throwback to some of our favorite baby Mayuree photos 🥰

Now nearly four months old, she’s getting bigger every day! Female clouded leopards are smaller than males, usually weighing 25 to 35 pounds, while males can weigh up to 50 pounds.
