Research has shown that multi-sensory activities help build new pathways in a child's brain by allowing them to make deeper connections with the material they are studying and attaching additional layers of meaning to their current knowledge base.

Utilizing the Orton-Gillingham method for teaching phonics, which has been scientifically proven to help children who struggle with dyslexia (or other learning differences) overcome the challenges of learning how to read, every lesson in each of the Foundational Phonics books provides reading practice in a variety of formats that engage multiple senses at once.

Letter Mastery begins by preparing a child's senses to help them learn to read through eye, ear, and tongue training. Students learn to identify letters in various styles of script, isolate single letter sounds, and pronounce them correctly. They are introduced to common word families and have an opportunity to manipulate words within the families with movable alphabet cards. The inclusion of the ASL alphabet into each lesson adds another kinesthetic aspect. Children learn to play with language through other fun activities like mouth gymnastics, listening lessons, and picture studies as well, laying a strong foundation for continued growth in reading, spelling, and beginning writing.

Word Mastery builds upon the components of eye, ear, and tongue training and gives the student exposure and practice with the common spelling patterns they've been naturally immersed in as they've learned to read. Copywork is included to build up fine motor muscles and improve penmanship. Diacritical marks are also introduced to help students differentiate between letter sounds depending on their usage in the word.

Everything is provided for you within the lesson, making teaching your child to read an enjoyable and meaningful part of each day.

Are you interested in Foundational Phonics but unsure of which book to place your child in to start the year?

Each of the books in the Foundational Phonics series were designed to meet your children right where they are and lift the burden from your shoulders.

If your child struggles with differentiating between similarly shaped letters or various fonts, we recommend beginning with Letter Mastery. Let them encounter each letter in a variety of meaningful, multi-sensory activities that help them establish an auditory, kinesthetic, and visual association with each letter of the alphabet. Progress at your child's individual pace, whether it's a couple pages or a whole chapter each day.
