This post is from Dr. Lembo (a Vet in Columbia, TN). New pet owners Please listen to him.
While I wish people wouldn't give pets for Christmas, it's going to happen. So here's a list of reasons why your new family member should be at the Vet's office the week after Christmas (or preferably before you show the kids!).
1) We understand that you know what a healthy dog looks like, but do you know what a heart murmur sounds like? How about luxating patellas? Elbow dysplasia? Didn't think so. Make sure that puppy is healthy before the kids sleep with her!
2) We know the breeder said they vaccinated the dog, but did they? I can generate fake paperwork and a sticker in about 3 minutes and Google.
3) All puppies and kittens come with some internal parasites. You want your kids to live with those for 3 weeks before we treat the puppy (and you have to take the kids to the doctor too?)
4) You need to start training that pet now. If you don't start things right, it will be much harder to catch up.
5) It's warm enough outside for fleas, ticks and heart worm transmission. Those preventions need to be started now.
6) At the end of January we will be busy dealing with all the people who ignored my advise now. So if you want to see your Vet and spend time with them, now is the time. The end of January will be busy with dogs with Parvo, crying kids and upset clients.
Come in now, we also have Christmas cookies!
