πŸ‘‚πŸ H**p Hearsay Alert! 🐸❌

You’ve probably heard someone say this before … but is it really true? πŸ€” Spoiler: nope! Did you know that a turtle's shell is not only part of the turtle (yes, the turtle is not inside the shell, the turtle IS the shell), but also that it's quite a sensitive structure? πŸ’‘πŸ’š

Stick with us as we bust the myths and share the facts, because healthy h**ps start with good information!

🌺🐒 Meet the Intern! πŸΈπŸŽ‰

Hello everyone! My name is Laura and I am an ARAV Social Media Intern and second year vet student at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine.

I have been a h**p fanatic since I was little, always flipping rocks and exploring ponds in search of Pennsylvania's finest scaly and slimy critters. That love only evolved as I expanded my interests into research and veterinary medicine in my undergraduate years. Now, as a vet student I'm carving my path to become a VMD with h**ps in mind by pursuing additional training opportunities like H**pVet, participating in fieldwork, and promoting effective science communication.

I am currently interested in wildlife and zoo pathology and have become increasingly aware of the fungal diseases plaguing our beloved h**ps. I hope that with continued collaboration with field biologists, clinicians, pathologists, and researchers we can eventually come up with solutions to these issues, preserving the great biodiversity of h**ps in our world.

When I'm not in school, I am usually taking care of my fish tanks, plants, or my red footed tortoise Humphrey. I also love photography and documenting the animals or landscapes I see during my travels.

Being an ARAV social media intern has been a great outlet for my love of science communication. I enjoy connecting others passionate for reptiles and amphibians to opportunities that can help broaden their knowledge base to help more of these incredible animals. I'm thrilled to be attending Exotic365 this year and if anyone wants to share cute h**p photos, talk about zoo medicine or fieldwork, or just want to say hi please do so! :)πŸ’πŸ¦ŽπŸ’š

🦎 Meet the Intern! 🐸

Hi everyone! I'm Remco, a final-year veterinary student at Utrecht University in the Netherlands and one of ARAV's Social Media Interns.

Although reptiles and amphibians have always had a special place in my heart (one day I'll finally have my own Amazon milk frog!! 🐸), my interests extend across zoo, wildlife, and conservation medicine. Over the past few years, I've been lucky enough to complete externships and placements at zoos, wildlife rescue centres, clinics, and research institutions around the world, working with an incredible variety of species along the way.

These days, I'm particularly interested in infectious diseases, preventive medicine, wildlife population health, and finding ways to better connect research with everyday clinical practice.

Outside of my studies, I'm usually travelling to weird places, off h**ping, or just chilling out at home. I also work a part-time field job in bat research, so don't be surprised if you catch me out and about in the middle of the night!

What I love about working with ARAV is getting to help share the incredible work being done by clinicians, researchers, and conservationists from around the world - it's a great way to help make h**p knowledge more accessible for vets and students alike. I've really enjoyed contributing to ARAV's social media so far, and I'd love to connect with more of you along the way. If you share an interest in reptiles, amphibians, zoo medicine, conservation, or wildlife research (or just want to talk bats and frogs!), feel free to reach out or drop a comment, I'd love to hear from you!

πŸŽ¨πŸ‘» Something delightfully unusual is waiting in the ARAV Silent Auction...

This year, you'll have the chance to bid on tickets to the Visual Arts Museum of Paranormal Antiquities (VAMPA), one of Philadelphia's most unique attractions.
VAMPA explores the supernatural, folklore, mythology, and faith through art and historical artifacts. Whether you're a fan of the mysterious, the macabre, or simply love discovering hidden gems, this is an experience you won't want to miss.

A huge thank you to VAMPA for supporting ARAV's fundraising efforts. Every winning bid helps support the ARAV Research & Conservation Grants, funding projects that advance reptile and amphibian medicine and conservation.

Who knows... you might leave Philadelphia with more than just conference memories. πŸ‘€
