Cold can sneak up fast for dogs especially seniors, short-haired breeds, and puppies. Keep walks shorter on freezing days and watch for shivering or lifting paws.
Salt, ice melt, and frozen sidewalks can irritate or crack paw pads. Use paw balm before and after walks, or try booties if your pup will tolerate them.
Salt and chemicals can cling to fur and paws. Wipe paws, bellies, and legs after each walk to prevent irritation and keep them from licking anything harmful.
Coats or sweaters are great for small dogs, seniors, and thin-coated breeds. Make sure gear fits snugly but doesnโt restrict movement.
Winter means darker mornings and early sunsets. Use reflective leashes, collars, and harnesses or a small clip-on light to help drivers and other walkers see you.
Dogs can get dehydrated even in cold weather. Bring a small water bottle on longer outings and offer water once youโre back inside.
