This one was a HAIRY case 🐾

Stevie came to us with a large swelling above his left eye that was diagnosed as a trichoblastoma—a typically benign tumor arising from a hair follicle (most often well-circumscribed, but capable of growing locally and causing significant distortion). He was unable to see out of his left eye!

He was referred for a surgical consult to determine if the eye could be saved. Our plan: explore the mass and be prepared for eye removal if the tumor had invaded deeper structures.

Fortunately, Stevie gave us the best-case scenario. The mass was well-defined and able to be completely excised. We treated the surgical margins with cryotherapy and closed the site with absorbable suture.

Just 9 days later, we received these photo updates - swipe ➡️ for a happy cat.

Stevie is doing tremendous. 🙌

We’ll continue to monitor closely, but for now, this is exactly the outcome we hope for: remove the problem, preserve the eye, and get Stevie back to being Stevie. 🐱

Sunny doesn’t see the world the way we do… but she doesn’t let that stop her from living fully in it. 💙

This past Sunday, Sunny won an Easter egg hunt—against other sighted dogs.

Sunny lost both eyes to glaucoma after years of medical management and endolaser therapy. Despite every effort, glaucoma can still win. And when it does, our priority shifts—from saving vision to relieving pain.

Eye removal is never the outcome we hope for. But it can give something just as important back: comfort, quality of life, and the chance to keep being them.

We may have lost Sunny’s eyes…but we didn’t lose Sunny. And we certainly didn’t lose her spirit.

Dogs are unbelievably resilient.
Sunny is the definition of it. 🐾

No, this is NOT AI generated.

When your dog suddenly develops a “bug-eyed” appearance, it may be more than just excitement.

This sweet dog developed what’s called extraocular myositis. As the name suggests, it is inflammation of the muscles that surround the eye and is most commonly seen in golden retrievers. With early diagnosis and treatment with immunomodulatory therapy, the prognosis is often very good.

Every day our goal is simple: restore vision, relieve pain, and help families feel hopeful about their pet’s future.

But behind every visit are the small details that can blur the day — missed calls, voicemails, follow-ups, and scheduling. AI brings clarity to our day by simplifying the small details.

When those things run smoothly, it gives our team something incredibly valuable: more time to focus on the pets and people who need us most.

⚠️VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED!⚠️

This is truly an amazing case - one of the worst traumatic injuries we’ve seen. This sweet labradoodle came to us for evaluation of a “stick in the eye.” We see corneal foreign bodies quite often and when we received the emergency phone call about a stick in the eye, we figured it may very well be another corneal foreign body.

IT👏WAS👏NOT👏

On presentation, it appeared as though the eye had been fully penetrated and blinded by a large stick. The decision was made to take him to surgery to remove the stick and what was believed to be a severely damaged right eye at the same time. Once under anesthesia, it was determined the stick managed to travel just beneath the eye, leaving the eye intact. The stick was removed and the stick track was vigorously flushed.

After 3 weeks of intensive medical management, the eye remans visual and is fully healed! Truly an amazing and miraculous recovery!

Big Bird visits The Eye Vets!

Not actually THE Big Bird but he was big! Dr. Minaldi examined a beautiful American white pelican this week because of an injury to his right eye. He determined that the bird sustained a severe retinal injury. Medical therapy was prescribed in hopes of trying to heal some of the damaged retina.

Swipe 👉 to see the large bag of fish that kept him cooperative for his exam 🤣

What a night! We hosted nearly 100 veterinary professionals last night at Maggiano’s in Nashville for our second RACE approved continuing education event of the year. Dr. Minaldi provided our guests with a fantastic presentation on Uveitis in dogs and cats. It was such a pleasure (and a blast!) getting to socialize with those in attendance.

Special thanks to and for co-sponsoring the event. We can’t wait for the next one! Stay tuned for details!

Do you find yourself wondering how to manage cats with pigmented lesions on their iris? They are one of the most stressful disease processes for owners to monitor because there is a risk for malignant transformation into feline diffuse iris melanoma.

At The Eye Vets, we offer diode laser treatment for feline iris hyperpigmentation to decrease progression of these lesions. In this video, you will see the hyperpigmented lesions contract as they are treated with the diode laser.

In 2023, a study published in JAVMA evaluated diode laser ablation of progressive pigmented iris lesions in 317 cats (356 eyes) and determined that it appears overall safe and effective in decreasing progression of iris pigmentation. They shared a very helpful grading scale from iris nevus (freckle) to advanced grade 5 disease. Using this grading system can help to provide guidance on how concerned you should be with these lesions and when it is appropriate to discuss surgical intervention instead of continued monitoring.
