Oreo was a very sick little hamster that presented with septicemia and both abdomenal and pleural effusion from a uterine infection. She was treated with antibiotics and heart support for a month and, once weaned from her medication, is now a healthy and happy 1.5 year old that loves running on her wheel until the wee hours of the morning and is ready for adoption. Introducing our beautiful Iggy rescue, Leo, with Metabolic Bone Disease. He looks like he has large leg muscles, but this is actually bone swelling as his body breaks down his bones for calcium. Calcium channels are used for nerve conduction stabilizing heart beat, food digestion, locomotion, etc. When a reptile's calcium intake is low enough, this is the only way the body can continue vital functions. We are supplementing Leo with injectable calcium weekly along with liquid feedings with oral calcium daily to replenish his calcium stores and help him to recover as he continues to grow.
