Discussing the weight of your pet is an uncomfortable topic for both vet and owner but should never be avoided. Putting blinders on about the weight of your pet is putting them at risk for disease and early death.  Leading risks to being overweight include nonactive, sedentary  lifestyles, being spayed/neutered, overfeeding/excessive treats, age/breed/genetics and underlying medical reasons.

Spaying and neutering is important for countless health reasons but it puts our pets at >50% risk of being overweight or obese. Surgery changes hormone levels, which often increases food drive or lowers energy needs. It is best to go into spay/neutering at an ideal body weight and know that feeding quantities must be adjusted right after.

When compared to lean or “fit” pet, overweight/obese animals develop an increased risk of the following problems:
Cancer
Diabetes mellitus
Heart disease
High blood pressure
Osteoarthritis
Urinary bladder stones
Anesthetic complications
Reduced lifespan

Dogs are considered overweight when they weigh 10% - 20% above their ideal body weight, and obese when they weigh > 20%. In North America, obesity is the most common preventable disease in companion animals. The 2022 Association for Pet Obesity Prevention survey reports that 59% of dogs (and 61% of cats) are overweight.  Your veterinary healthcare team can calculate calories for a more ideal weight. Once calculated remember:

“Treats or snacks should comprise no more than 10% of your pet’s daily calorie intake.”

Exchange that extra treat for more snuggle time, a longer walk, playtime with the laser or wand toy. I promise your pet’s health will appreciate that and in the long run so will you. 🐾
