The spare chair was supposed to end the daily argument with Leonard. Leonard now sleeps with his front half on one seat and his back half on the other. His owner has been answering emails from a folding stool. Moving either chair wakes Leonard, who reacts as though the arrangement was his idea and had been working perfectly.

Dogs and cats deserve to live without being subjected to painful experiments when safer, effective alternatives are available. California has taken an important step toward that goal.

California became the first U.S. state to pass a law restricting certain toxicology tests on dogs and cats. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the PET Act into law after it was introduced by State Senator Scott Wiener. The law targets specific experiments involving pesticides and other chemical substances. These tests can expose animals to harmful substances and cause serious suffering.

For many animal lovers, this is progress worth celebrating. Dogs and cats are sentient beings. They feel pain, fear, and distress, and they depend on us for care and protection. They cannot understand why they are placed in a laboratory or exposed to substances that may make them sick.

Science is also moving forward. Researchers can use methods such as human cell testing and computer models to study the effects of certain chemicals. These methods cannot replace every animal test yet, but they offer promising ways to reduce the need for animal experiments.

One important detail: California's law does not ban all chemical testing on dogs and cats. It covers specific types of toxicology testing and includes exceptions for certain veterinary products and tests required by federal agencies. Still, it marks a meaningful change.

Every step that reduces unnecessary animal suffering matters. Progress happens when people speak up, lawmakers listen, and better methods become available.

Dogs and cats give us companionship, trust, and unconditional love. They deserve care and compassion, even when they are not someone's beloved family pet.

Should more states follow California's lead and restrict harmful animal testing, or should it be banned entirely as long as alternatives exist? Share your thoughts below. 👇

YES: Mamdani just made sure no New Yorker has to choose between feeding their family and feeding their dog.

Starting this week, 22 city-funded food pantries across all five boroughs are handing out free dog and cat food.

It's the first time the city has ever done it. Families can now pick up food for their pets on the same trip they make for their own groceries.

"No New Yorker should have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their pets," Mamdani said.

The city put $500,000 toward the pet food and is also funding spay and neuter services with the City Council.

This fixes a problem pantries see every day. The city's social services commissioner said people will skip their own meals before letting their animals go hungry. When money runs out, some families end up surrendering pets they love to shelters that are already overcrowded.

Staten Island's hunger task force asked the city not to leave the borough out. Two Staten Island pantries are on the list.

A Bronx animal rescue group said the program will help keep families together as the changes to SNAP hit home. That's Trump's Big Beautiful Bill, which made the largest cut to food stamps in American history.

The pet pantries run through the same program Mamdani tripled funding for earlier this year, which now supports more than 700 food pantries citywide.

Washington is cutting food aid. New York is finding ways to make sure even the dog eats tonight.

THANK YOU, Mayor Mamdani!

A Minnesota cat named Fridge has been reunited with his owner after spending 39 days missing in Colorado near Great Sand Dunes National Park.

Fridge disappeared during a trip to the area, leaving his owner searching for him in unfamiliar surroundings. As the days turned into weeks, the chances of finding him seemed increasingly uncertain.

But more than five weeks after he vanished, Fridge was found alive, bringing an unexpected and emotional end to the search.

The reunion is especially remarkable considering the challenging landscape surrounding Great Sand Dunes, where temperatures can change dramatically between day and night and wildlife is abundant.

Peter Lang was 77 when the Tubbs Fire reached the hills above Santa Rosa, California. He sent his wife, his staff and 30 overnight guests down the hill and stayed behind with the animals.

That was the night of October 8, 2017, nine years ago this week. Lang owned Safari West, a wildlife park of 400 acres that he and his wife, Nancy, had opened in 1993. More than 1,000 animals lived there, most of them African species, with giraffes, rhinos and cheetahs among them. The fire was coming from the direction of Calistoga, and there was no time to move the big animals out.

Lang picked up a garden hose and spent the night going around the enclosures and putting out spot fires. At one point he had 10 hoses joined end to end. When flames got too close to a pen, he moved the animals in it to another one, the hyenas included.

His own house stood half a mile away. He could defend the house or the park, and he chose the park. The house burned down.

By sunrise every animal at Safari West was alive, and on October 10 Lang was back at work with his staff. He told the Press Democrat, the Santa Rosa paper, why he'd stayed. "I have a thousand souls I'm responsible for," he said.
