Sometimes I get to work my own dogs too! Here’s a quick clip of Zen in Shed Hunt class. She is working towards a novice title right now, but I really just want her to be able to find shed antlers in the woods when we go hiking this winter

Sage is a good girl!

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Play is just as important as training. Training can and probably should feel like playing. Incorporate play in your dog training!

Unexpected fence encounter:
We be been working on Sage’s reactivity first by giving the “check in” a lot of value, then by doing the same things in the presence of triggers at a distance that Sage becomes alert, but not rehearsing classic reactivity behaviors. The fence encountered was unplanned and caught me off guard (this is the problem with trying to film my work while I work.Situational awareness goes out the window.) Sage handled it well considering. If we lingered any longer the outcome would likely be different from what I want to see.
We got a little hop and then Sage agreed to come along with me. Her recovery from that event was beautiful.
We celebrate our progress and we carry on.

How do you practice recall when the dog won’t leave you?
Sage has barely been here a week, so we are still keeping it light… low distractions, minimal pressure and only used to prevent rehearsing bad habits and lots and lots of wins.
I will always reward the check in! If the dog is in the habit of keeping track of you, recall is going to be a lot easier to achieve.
Keep it light, keep it fun has been our mission this last week.
Mission accomplished

This is Sage. I already love this sweet dog. She has an obedience foundation, but that was before reactivity reared its head.
Our goal here is for Sage to let other dogs exist without her making a fuss about it. Easy enough? We shall see
