As most of you know, every year we rent the drill hall of the National Guard Armory in Nampa for our January classes.
Unfortunately they have new rules that don't allow for renting the drill hall for multiple evenings - except for blood drives and voting. And yes, I did offer to give blood and/or vote daily and they still declined...
I'm now scrambling for a large warehouse type building to rent for our indoor winter classes. Any and all input, suggestions and offers are not only welcomed but desperately needed!

🐾 Welcome to Week 8! 🐾

This is our first week back after doggy spring break — a well-earned 4-day break from training to give everyone a much-needed rest!
This week at class, we’ll be putting those stays to the test… with canned cat food and tennis balls!
Checkered picnic blankets spread out on the grass usually bring to mind fried chicken and potato salad — not open cans of smelly cat food. But we’re going to do whatever it takes to have dogs whose obedience skills you can actually rely on in real-life situations.
Side note: If you’re ever invited to a picnic and they serve canned cat food, you need new friends.
Once picnic time is over, we’ll set up the cans of cat food and tennis balls in a bit of a gauntlet and call the dogs to come to us. Their job? Ignore all those wonderfully tempting distractions and come straight to us for excessive praise!
And I mean excessive. The kind of praise you’d give a dog who just went outside, mowed the lawn, did the dishes and remembered to take out the trash.
Because when you call your dog, you want them to know that coming to you is always the best choice, no matter what’s going on around them.
Week 8 is going to be a fun one! 🐾

The last few weeks have been so busy I haven’t even had a chance to post about classes! 🤦‍♀️

Week 5 & 6 went off without a hitch, and Milky Way, the wonder goat, did a fantastic job as usual. 🐐
Milky Way comes to class on week 6 as a distraction, but not exactly the kind of distraction the dogs are hoping for. Most of them are slightly creeped out by the giant horned beast wandering around, so they’re so busy keeping an eye on him that they hardly even notice we've taken the leashes off!
And THAT is exactly why I bring him.
It’s pretty hard to worry about what your dog is doing when your dog is busy thinking, “What in the actual heck IS that thing?”
All of the dogs did absolutely beautiful with Week 6, and by Week 7 they were definitely ready for calmer no-goat laid back class!
For Week 7, we divide the class into smaller groups and head out for a little doggy walk with minimal distractions. Each dog also gets to show off their 5-minute down stay.
And then… SPRING BREAK!
No training for four whole days! The dogs get a little vacation, their humans get a little vacation, and hopefully everyone comes back refreshed and ready for one of my favorite classes of the year…
PICNIC CLASS!!

This week’s class is my favorite! 🐾

Over the last week, the dogs have been learning their sit-stay, working their way from staying right beside their owners to staying while their owners move up to 18 feet away!

This week we introduce the down-stay—which, as you might imagine, the lazy dogs LOVE!
And then we’ll be practicing both their sit and down stays from 18 feet away…with the added temptation of raw hamburger!

Because apparently asking a dog to stay while you walk away isn’t enough. We have to add hamburgers. 😂

But the hamburger isn’t actually the reason this is my favorite week.

Week 4 is when we introduce the most important command your dog will ever learn: COME!

And THIS is where things get really fun.

“Come” is the command we want every dog to know really, really well. Because when you need your dog to come, you don’t want them to think about it, negotiate with you, or suddenly become deaf. 🙄
You need them to turn around and come running!

This week is when we start teaching them that coming back to their person is ALWAYS a good thing.

I absolutely love this week because you can really start to see all the pieces coming together—and watching the dogs and their owners gain confidence is the best part. ❤️

Now…let’s see who is more interested in the hamburger or their owner! 🐾

🐾 Week 3 is here, and we're getting so close to my favorite week of training! 🐾

By week three, all of the dogs are already heeling on loose leashes—and many are doing so with the leash casually tossed over their owner’s shoulder!

They’ve also mastered learning the automatic sit, and this week we take it to the next level. Starting now, when their owner stops, the dogs will automatically sit in the heel position without being given a command!

On the very first night of class, I talk about what I believe are the two most important commands we can ever teach our dogs: STAY and COME.

This week, we begin teaching the command “stay.” As with every command, repetition is key! No dog is born knowing what our words mean. It’s up to us to guide them, teach them what we’re asking, remain consistent, and celebrate their successes with plenty of praise.

The weather is looking excellent, the dogs are doing amazing, and I have a feeling this is going to be a fantastic week of training! 🐕🐾
