🚨We are very excited to announce our newest veterinarian here at EasTex Veterinary Clinic! ‼️

Dr. Hannah DeRise grew up on military bases all over the world before returning to Nacogdoches in 2013 following her father’s retirement. While she had always had a love for animals, this move fostered a love and appreciation for agricultural and rural communities.
She completed her undergraduate studies at Stephen F. Austin State University in 2018, working as a veterinary technician and forging client relationships during this time. She recently graduated from Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine in May of 2026 as a part of their second ever graduating class. In her spare time, Dr. DeRise enjoys lifting weights, reading, spending time with family, and caring for her two dogs, Daisy and Fern. Professionally, she is most passionate about client communication and education, soft tissue surgery, and preventative care.
After 4 long years in the Panhandle, Dr. DeRise is excited to return home to East Texas (and the trees)!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has provided an important update on New World Screwworm which has been detected in a bovine in Zavala County, Texas. General information about New World Screwworm (NWS) can be found in the text below and in the attached infographic.

The adult screwworm fly is about the size of a common housefly (or slightly larger), with orange eyes, a metallic blue or green body, and three dark stripes along its back. It gets its name from the behavior of its larvae (maggots) as they burrow (screw) into the wound, feeding as they go. The maggots (larvae) cause extensive damage by tearing at the hosts’ tissue with sharp mouth hooks. The wound can quickly become enlarged and deeper as more maggots hatch and feed on living tissue.

Because they feed on live flesh, NWS maggots may burrow deep into wounds or openings, while other species of maggots may appear around the outer surface of the wound. In addition, even the smallest wounds have the potential to attract flies, so it is imperative that you keep a close eye on your animals for any signs of wounds.

Lastly, NWS infestations are a reportable disease! Immediately report any suspicious wounds, maggots, or infestations to a local accredited veterinarian, your State Animal Health Official, or a USDA veterinarian.

📣We are very excited to introduce the newest member to the EasTex Veterinary Team!

Dr. Jordan Carrell was born and raised in Richardson, Texas. Growing up, she developed a love for caring for animals and serving those in her community. She earned both her Bachelors degree in Biomedical Sciences and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M University. Dr. Carrell graduated from veterinary school in 2021 and has worked in mixed animal practice ever since.

Dr. Carrell lives in Nacogdoches with her husband, Russell, and their daughter, Clara Beth. They have 2 two dogs, Floyd and Brutus, and two horses, Holly and Penelope. In her spare time, Dr. Carrell enjoys gardening, spending time with her family and spending time outdoors.
