Once again….we could use your help with some medical bills. Frank and Cleo came in a couple of weeks ago. This will be a long post. Don’t let us lose you halfway through…..
Frank was a fairly simple neuter, standard vetting and a cherry eye repair. But, poor Cleo…she was in a pickle.
Seems Cleo found herself pregnant. But, this was no ordinary pregnancy. Cleo was said to have had a C-section/spay a few years ago. A hernia had developed from that c-section, so she had a huge knot between her last set of teats. It definitely didn’t look like any type of hernia we had ever seen. We waited two weeks for her hernia repair appointment and to check that she was for sure spayed, but in those two weeks, she developed quite the belly. We took her in for that appointment and decided to have an ultrasound done just to be on the safe side. Indeed, she was pregnant, so obviously the spay had not been done. After an x-ray was done, it was deemed that she had two babies. The babies looked absolutely huge, and we weren’t sure what kind of problems she would have in relation to that hernia. So, we decided that it was best to prioritize Cleo’s life and have a C-section done when we thought it was going to be close to time. Because we didn’t know a breeding date, it was literally just a guesstimation on when to do the surgery. We had it set up for next Friday, but…….those babies had different plans and decided to make an entrance yesterday.
We knew something was wrong from the get-go and was worried that the hernia might prevent her from having those big babies normally. Of course, she went into labor just as the vet closed at noon yesterday. She was not pushing at all, but there was a baby in the birth canal. So, away we went to the vet.
Her guts were an absolute mess. One uterine horn was adhered to her bladder and it was so adhered that it looked like one large organ. After seeing that, we believe it was a miracle she could even p*e! The other one was adhered to the spleen and part of the omentum. The spleen was adhered to the omentum (and still is). Dr. Leland had to separate all of that and figure out what was what. He had to leave a piece of each uterine horn attached to the bladder and the spleen to risk not damaging the organ it was attached to. There was also two big strings of suture material left over from whatever surgery she had before. It was just floating around in there doing who knows what for who knows how long. He wasn’t sure if her uterus had burst at some point, or what caused such a mess and adhesions inside. He said it was, by far, the hardest c-section he had ever done. There’s NO WAY she could’ve gotten them out on her own. We don’t even think her uterus could’ve contracted to push them out with it being adhered to everything else. There was also a puppy that had died inside and she had tried to absorb it. It was a brownish, black gooey gob of yuck. The fact that she didn’t die from an infection from that is a miracle in itself, but because she was able to carry healthy puppies to full term was the biggest miracle. She definitely had a long, rough day!
The 2 puppies are doing well! They were both born purple when they came out, but we got them going. One is 8oz and the other 6.5oz. Both are boys and they are Cleo’s coloring with Frank’s markings. They are spitting image of the other one, just with reverse markings.
Today all three are doing well and she has been a great mother so far. We are SO glad they are here, but we feel like we might have a long road ahead of us. Dr. Leland said he hopes she survives this.
