Let’s face it, vet visits can be scary for our pets if they haven’t been appropriately conditioned to the environment and body handling techniques required for their safety and the safety of the vet staff.

While I am beyond grateful to work in the field of veterinary medicine and have the knowledge to prepare my dogs for these types of situations, it is often a key piece of training that most people forget. Gunner has a genetic heart condition called Pulmonic Stenosis. He has already had a successful procedure to reduce the pressure gradient in his pulmonic value but he will still require lifelong monitoring and perhaps future re-intervention. Long story short? He needs more frequent vet visits and routine Echocardiograms to ensure he has every opportunity for a long, happy, and healthy life.

So how do we prepare?
➡️ Happy visits to the vet hospital for weight checks, saying hi to staff, and getting lots of positive reinforcement for calm behavior
➡️ Desensitization to common body handling and restraint techniques utilized by veterinary staff
➡️ Desensitization to veterinary equipment such as stethoscopes and ultrasound probes
➡️ Training functional behaviors such as a chin rest, hand target, magnet hand, and laying on his side for prolonged periods for less stressful handling
➡️ Working along side vet staff to ensure they can safely do their job while still advocating for my dog - work WITH them NOT AGAINST THEM
➡️ Mild oral sedatives the night before and morning of a big visit to further reduce stress
➡️ Muzzle conditioning for staff safety and comfort in the event it is needed

A little preparation, understanding, and communication can go a long way in making your dogs vet visits less stressful for you, your dog, and the vet staff!

This video was taken at Gunner’s most recent cardiology appointment and I am happy to announce that his heart is looking great! ❤️

Just ✨jumping✨ in to wish all of my clients a very safe holiday weekend!

While you’re out enjoying the long weekend don’t forget to take a moment and reflect on its purpose: honoring the brave men and women who paid the ultimate price for their country. 🇺🇸

The boys and I will be enjoying a weekend off and we may even schedule some fun time at the dock. All client correspondence will be returned Tuesday. We hope everyone stays safe and cool!

Romeo is still looking for his forever home! He is an excellent boy and super smart. He will require long term monitoring for his medical condition but he would make an exceptional addition to a loving home! ❤️

🎉 NEW CLASS ANNOUCEMENT🎉

My first AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Class is now enrolling!
This 6-week program meets once per week and is designed to build a strong foundation of good manners, confidence, and social skills during your puppy’s most important developmental stage. Using positive reinforcement, you and your puppy will work on essential behaviors like sit, down, coming when called, leash walking, and polite interactions with people and other dogs, while also focusing on socialization and responsible ownership.

The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program is open to all puppies, including both purebreds and mixed breeds. Puppies who are not registered with the AKC can still earn the S.T.A.R. Puppy award and receive a certificate. Puppies with an AKC, PAL, or AKC Canine Partners number can earn S.T.A.R. Puppy as an official AKC title—making it your dog’s very first training title.

The first class is a humans-only session (no puppies) where we will review testing materials, class expectations, and training methods. The final class is dedicated to completing the S.T.A.R. Puppy evaluation.

📍Where: Murrells Inlet Veterinary Hospital

🗓️When: Tuesday’s for 6 weeks starting May 12

⏰Time: 6:30PM

Requirements: Puppies must be at least 12 weeks old and no older than 1 year at the start of class and be up to date on all age-appropriate vaccinations (proof of vaccines is required).

This class is the perfect starting point for raising a well-mannered, confident dog while preparing for future training goals like the Canine Good Citizen program.

This class is limited to 4 teams, 2 teams are required to hold a session.

Meet Romeo! ❤️

Breed: Standard poodle
Age: 5 years old
S*x: Neutered male
Good with dogs: Yes, as long as they match his energy. He is bouncy and excitable, so would not do well with dogs that are more quiet or subdued.
Good with cats: Possibly, but has not been fully evaluated
Good with kids: Unknown. He has had some reactivity (appears to be more excitement related) when first seeing them, but calms down. Though he has not been formally introduced since being in foster care.
Up to date on vaccines: Some (rabies, others unknown)

Romeo is a very sweet 5 year old neutered male standard poodle. He was surrendered to Murrells Inlet Veterinary Hospital due to a medical emergency which required extensive intensive care and long term medical management. He was given a chance at recovery, and recover he did! He has been with his foster home for a month and is ready to find his forever family.

Romeo had a severe case of bladder stones, which were completely blocking his urethra, making urination impossible. Thanks to the surgeons and staff at MIVH, Romeo had surgery to remove the stones and is back to his happy, bouncy poodle self.

Romeo will require a specialized prescription diet for the rest of his life - this is not optional, as well as periodic vet check ups and urine tests to ensure that he is not developing any further infection or additional stones.

For more information on adopting Romeo, please email [email protected] for an application and to be put in contact with his foster. Veterinary references required.
