Ticks are becoming more of a problem this year. Keep your pets and your family protected from those blood thirsty, disease causing, “vampire” insects. We have already seen patients (dogs and cats) who were seriously ill from tick transmitted diseases this year. Fortunately, they responded to antibiotic treatment since they were brought in early enough in the disease process. Yes, even cats that go outside can get ticks. Keep grass mowed and brush cleared. If treating your yard, use a liquid product (not granules that your pet may accidentally pick up), wear gloves, and follow label directions. The prescription products work best to keep your pet protected. Nexgard combo is a monthly topical product that works well to keep your cat protected from heartworms, fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites control. (Don't touch the application site for 4 hours after use). Nexgard, Credelio, Bravecto, Simparica, etc. are good prescription flea and tick products for dogs, but should not be used in dogs that have seizures. Other options are topicals like Advantix, Frontline Plus or the name brand Seresto collar (the only safe and effective collar we recommend). Signs of a possible tick disease include fever, a lack of appetite, lethargy, reluctance to move around or lameness that may shift from one limb to another. Brush and check your pet daily to remove any “hitch hikers” as soon as possible. Ticks can attach anywhere on the body but favorite hiding places in dogs tend to be between the toes, behind the ears or in the ear folds, face, neck, armpits and groin. For cats, also check the face, neck, ears and rears. We will be happy to recommend the best options to protect your pets’ health at their next appointment. Hope you all stay tick free!

Freedom is not free. Memorial Day, the last Monday of May each year, is the day we set aside in remembrance for all members of the U.S. military who have fought and died in service. 3 pm on Memorial Day is the nationally dedicated moment to remember all those who willingly placed themselves on the line to keep our country free and safe, to protect the freedoms and liberties that we all hold dear. Please join us in taking that moment to remember the brave men and women who paid the ultimate price for all of us. This year on May 25, 2026, our office will be closed as we celebrate this day of remembrance. We will open again on Tuesday, May 26 at 8 AM and resume our normal hours of operation.

Warren Animal Hospital wants to recognize and congratulate our 2 recent graduates! Braley graduated from MTSU earning her Bachelor of Science degree, double majoring in Animal and General Sciences. She participated in many agricultural learning events for the community such as Spring Fling and Winter village, where local children and families were able to learn about where their food comes from. She also helped run the Regional FFA Livestock Judging competition when it was hosted by the school and was a member of the professional Agricultural Sorority, Sigma Alpha. She will be moving back home to east Tennessee in July. We will really miss her and wish her the best as she begins a new chapter in her life. Braley says “Some of my fondest memories were going to the MTSU farm units, all of my animal science classes, and getting to do a genetics experiment on aging. When I go back home, I plan on volunteering at a rescue ranch, getting more equine and exotic pet experience, and then eventually applying for veterinary school.”
Darion recently graduated from high school. He has his whole life ahead of him with new experiences and adventures in store for him. He plans on attending Motlow Community College studying animal science and may later transfer to MTSU. His parents have a special message for him. “As parents, we are so proud of Darion and his continued movement towards understanding God's plan for his life. He overcame amazing odds to graduate from high school and is now focusing on attending college. Dr. Warren and all of the wonderful staff have been so kind. We know that the lessons learned over the past 2 years are ones he will never forget.”

Congratulations and best wishes to both our new graduates!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms today. Pet moms, dog moms, cat moms, and all the rest. Here at Warren Animal Hospital, we want to recognize mothers of all kinds. Mothers are one of the strongest things in nature there is, and the strength it takes to raise any young is incredible. From bringing new life into the world, then caring for their children for the rest of their lives, mothers are a major part of any life. Through care, patience, love, and affection, they nurture their young and help train them as they grow. Always there to answer a cry for help or offer a comforting embrace when needed the most, mothers provide a safe and peaceful place. Mothers make sacrifices, using their energy to protect their children from danger and help them live to be happy and healthy. From the smallest female cat or dog to all the caring human moms, mothers are a force to be reckoned with. For the comfort and love they bring to our lives, we thank you mothers and wish you a happy Mother’s Day.

Saturday, April 25th is National Sense of Smell Day, celebrating and appreciating our ability to smell. Although our sense of smell may be good, a dog’s sense of smell is approximately 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than a human’s. Their olfactory part of the brain is larger and they have millions more scent receptors than we do. They smell the world rather than just see it. Scent games are a good way to keep them happy and mentally engaged. Hide-a-treat chew toys or Kongs are good or you could hide treats in a towel (if they are not a chewer-upper of things) and roll the towel with the ends tucked in like a burrito for your dog to sniff the treats out and unravel the towel to get to the treats. Alternatively, you could create a scent scavenger hunt for your dog. Dogs love to smell new scents – but are very sensitive. Don’t use perfumed shampoos or other products on your pets – they would much prefer to go roll in the grass to remove that “lovely” scent you just applied to them. Even the lightly scented air fresheners in the house can be overwhelmingly strong for your pets. (See our previous posts on toxic and safe scents for pets on 2-6-26). Sniffing things is not only just for mental engagement, but it also helps lowering anxiety and stress. Think when we go outside for fresh air and smell the flowers, it brings us a sense of peace. All dogs have a good sense of smell, but some in particular, the hounds and working dogs, are able to find you miles away just from your scent. Their brains dedicate 40 times more space to processing smells and trained dogs have been used to detect missing people, environmental pests, illegal drugs, explosives, and diseases like cancer or low blood sugar, migraines and upcoming epileptic seizures. A wet dog nose doesn’t just mean they are happy, normally the wet nose traps scent particles helping them to smell more effectively. Fun fact : Dogs can detect the equivalent of 1/2 teaspoon of sugar in 2 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Enjoy some happy scents with your dog – food, treats, and the best of all -from your dog’s point of view – the scent of you.

During spring the mature cows start calving and adding their new babies to the herd. We had 4 calves born in 1 weekend! The expectant mothers will usually go off by themselves, away from the herd to have their baby. They will stay separated from the herd for several days or longer, bonding with their calf and keeping them safe. Several new mothers may stay closer together, apart from the herd. Soon the new mothers will wander off, grazing. Sometimes they will leave the young calves and go farther away for food. The newest mother of the bunch seems to be left with the task of “babysitting” the youngest calves for several mothers, until another cow has a newer baby and she passes the responsibility off to the newest mother. Moms will check in on their babies fairly often, but will not stay close to them all the time after the “new” has worn off. However, it can be dangerous to approach a calf if momma is anywhere in the vicinity – she will be very protective of her baby! New babies are up, walking, running, playing, and nursing while sometimes tasting the fresh grass as well, soon after birth. It’s so exciting every spring to watch the calves as they grow and play!

This Saturday, April 11, is National Pet Day! At Warren Animal Hospital we understand just how much your pets mean to you and your family. From the bottom of their toes to the tips of their nose, our pets bring love and happiness into our lives even on our hardest days. They love on us, let us love on them, offer their companionship, and their crazy little quirks always manage to bring us joy. Maybe it’s the way they bark, or a silly little dance they do before you feed them. Maybe they make biscuits on your lap while they snuggle close and blink slowly to show they love you. They could be a level ten clinger and never want to leave your side, or they could bark at every noise to protect you. In the end it’s the little things they do to show us that we’re a part of the pack and that warm our hearts. On this year’s National Pet Day, make sure to show your pet a little extra love. Take them on a walk, give them a new toy, an extra treat, or scratch that special spot behind the ears. For all that our pets mean to us, Happy National Pet Day from Warren Animal Hospital.

Happy Easter! What’s in your pet’s basket this year? Treats, toys, a new outfit, or maybe some grooming products? Whatever it is the Easter bunny leaves for your pet, make sure not to mix their basket up with yours. It’s all good and fair to share your chocolate eggs and marshmallow bunnies with your family and friends but make sure those human goodies don’t make it in your furry family’s mouth. Keep all your chocolate secured out of reach from your counter surfers, climbers, and four pawed vacuums. Make sure to keep it on a high shelf, or somewhere safe that your pets can’t reach or knock over. And make sure that you keep track of how many eggs you hide so you know if there are some still missing that your dog might find when they get to go sniffing after you. If they want to join in on the Easter hunt fun, try playing Hide-a-treat, or hide their toy to search and fetch for instead. With all the flowers in bloom, remember that lilies are toxic to our feline friends. Every part of the flowers from the pollen to the water they sit in can be deadly to cats, even though they are strangely attracted to them. Enjoy your celebrations and have an eggs-tra special Easter!
