Ticks are becoming more of a problem this year. Keep your pets and your family protected from those blood thirsty, disease causing, “vampire” insects. We have already seen patients (dogs and cats) who were seriously ill from tick transmitted diseases this year. Fortunately, they responded to antibiotic treatment since they were brought in early enough in the disease process. Yes, even cats that go outside can get ticks. Keep grass mowed and brush cleared. If treating your yard, use a liquid product (not granules that your pet may accidentally pick up), wear gloves, and follow label directions. The prescription products work best to keep your pet protected. Nexgard combo is a monthly topical product that works well to keep your cat protected from heartworms, fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites control. (Don't touch the application site for 4 hours after use). Nexgard, Credelio, Bravecto, Simparica, etc. are good prescription flea and tick products for dogs, but should not be used in dogs that have seizures. Other options are topicals like Advantix, Frontline Plus or the name brand Seresto collar (the only safe and effective collar we recommend). Signs of a possible tick disease include fever, a lack of appetite, lethargy, reluctance to move around or lameness that may shift from one limb to another. Brush and check your pet daily to remove any “hitch hikers” as soon as possible. Ticks can attach anywhere on the body but favorite hiding places in dogs tend to be between the toes, behind the ears or in the ear folds, face, neck, armpits and groin. For cats, also check the face, neck, ears and rears. We will be happy to recommend the best options to protect your pets’ health at their next appointment. Hope you all stay tick free!
