🐾 Meet Freya & Chase — An Exciting Milestone! 🐾

This morning, September 9, Freya and Chase had their first confirmed mating of this breeding cycle!

Freya is now entering what we believe will be the most fertile part of her cycle. We will continue monitoring them closely over the next few days, allowing Freya’s willingness and natural timing to guide us. Chase has been eagerly awaiting this stage of her cycle and is more than happy to oblige!

A little about Freya and Chase:

Freya is 2 years and 8 months old and weighs 43 pounds. She has a beautifully balanced, feminine build and is intelligent, affectionate, playful, active, and deeply connected to her family. She has the strength, endurance, curiosity, and natural instincts we value in a Norwegian Elkhound.

Chase is 4 years and 9 months old and weighs 48 pounds. He is solid and muscular throughout, with a strong, balanced build and excellent proportions for his size. He is confident, affectionate, playful, intelligent, and deeply devoted to Freya and his family.

Both dogs were confirmed by Embark to be 100% Norwegian Elkhound, and each was analyzed for 273 genetic health risks. Embark’s Pair Predictor gives this pairing an all-clear prediction for all three tested conditions identified as breed-relevant to Norwegian Elkhounds:

🐾 Progressive retinal atrophy, prcd

Freya and Chase are raised as active members of our family, with plenty of outdoor time, exercise, play, affection, mental stimulation, and opportunities to use their natural Norwegian Elkhound instincts.

Their meals are thoughtfully selected and rotated for variety. They enjoy nutritionally complete raw, gently cooked, and freeze-dried raw foods, supplemented with wholesome additions such as goat milk, sardines, eggs, and small amounts of freeze-dried beef liver. Our goal is to support healthy body condition, steady energy, strong muscles, beautiful coats, reproductive health, and overall well-being.

Freya and Chase are also the parents of our April 3 litter of seven beautiful puppies. Updates continue to arrive from the wonderful families raising them, and we love watching those puppies grow and develop!

A confirmed mating is not the same as a confirmed pregnancy, but we are hopeful and excited to have reached this milestone.

🐾 Karl Update — Smart, Social, and Full of Elkhound Personality! 🐾

We received a wonderful update from Ann about Karl, one of Freya and Chase’s puppies, and it sounds like this handsome boy is absolutely thriving!

Karl is proving to be one smart, energetic young man. He already knows sit, leave it, wait, settle, and his name, and Ann has even started teaching him right and left paw just for fun. He rings the bells when he needs to go outside, goes willingly into his kennel, and apparently has decided that 9:30 PM is bedtime — putting himself to bed all on his own. 😂

Fetch is one of his favorite games… although Karl has added his own Norwegian Elkhound rules. He’ll happily bring the toy back, but when you reach for it, the game sometimes becomes “catch me if you can!” And when he discovered the tag on his big ball, naturally he decided carrying it by the tag was much better than rolling it the way Ann was encouraging. 😂

He also LOVES chasing water from the hose and has plenty of that wonderful Elkhound energy to burn.

Karl attends doggy daycare on Ann’s longer workdays and has become a happy, social dog who plays with puppies and older dogs alike. He even has a cat cousin named Gus. Ann says the two of them invite each other to play by rolling over, which sounds pretty darn adorable.

Of course, he’s still a puppy and there are things they’re working on. Recall and leash walking are works in progress, nail trimming is definitely NOT on Karl’s list of favorite activities, and visitors can be extremely exciting. But once Karl gets a chance to greet his people, he settles down and becomes quiet and well behaved.

One thing we especially loved hearing is that Ann has been teaching Karl to “listen.” Even when his Elkhound voice gets going, he will often respond by sitting quietly and watching — although sometimes he apparently feels a softer little “bwufff” still needs to be said. ❤️

Most importantly, Karl sounds like exactly what we hoped for: happy, confident, intelligent, social, playful, and very loved.

Thank you, Ann, for the wonderful update and for giving this boy such a full and happy life. We absolutely love watching our Highland puppies grow. ❤️🐾

🐺 Fenrir Update! ❤️

It's hard to believe, but at just 17 weeks old, Fenrir is already pushing 30 pounds and continues to amaze his family every day.

Marshall recently shared that Fenrir learns so quickly that many new behaviors only take an hour or two of training before he understands them.

So far, Fenrir has learned to:

✔️ Load up
✔️ Sit
✔️ Down
✔️ Stay
✔️ Shake
✔️ Roll over
✔️ Go to bed
✔️ Find Mom
✔️ Find Dad
✔️ Wait patiently for his food
..and he's accomplishing all of this primarily through voice commands rather than treats, which speaks volumes about both his intelligence and his desire to work with his person.

Like many puppies who form a strong bond with their family, Fenrir is also working through a little separation anxiety. Marshall has been putting in the time and consistency, and it sounds like Fenrir is making steady progress. That's a very normal part of development for many young dogs, and with patience and routine, they usually gain confidence as they mature.

One part of Marshall's update really made me smile. He told me:

"I've been loving him and we're inseparable now."

Reading that made my day because that's exactly what we hope for with every puppy we raise.

Marshall also shared that Fenrir goes almost everywhere with him, and wherever they go, people are constantly stopping to ask about him. He even joked that three people have become emotional just from seeing Fenrir, and two others have actually tried to buy him!

That honestly doesn't surprise me. 😊

More than anything, what makes me happiest is seeing the incredible bond these two have formed. Watching our puppies grow into confident, intelligent companions and cherished members of their families is exactly why we do what we do.
