Our Honey!
The "third eyelid" in dogs refers to the nictitating membrane, a thin protective tissue located in the inner corner of each eye.
​Key Functions
​Protection: Acts as a natural shield against dust, dirt, and scratches.
​Moisture: Houses a key gland that produces roughly 30% to 50% of a dog's tears to keep the cornea lubricated.
​Cleaning: Sweeps horizontally across the eye like a windshield wiper to clear away debris.
​When It's Visible
​Normal: Briefly visible when a dog is extremely relaxed, sleepy, or coming out of anesthesia.
​Concern: Persistent exposure, redness, or a visible pink bulge ("cherry eye") signals potential irritation, injury, or infection and warrants a vet check.
