A dog freezes mid-trail.
Nose in the air.
Tail changes.
You know they caught something.

You step off the path and let the leash slide through your fingers while your dog works. Bushes. Logs. Dirt. Wind. Distractions.

Then suddenly…

Target found.

That moment, when your dog switches from “pet” to “working partner” is exactly the feeling I want to build with this project.

🌲🧭 Introducing GEOSCENTING 🧭🌲

A dog-centered adventure activity where teams use trained scent detection skills to locate hidden caches out in the real world.

Dogs will learn to locate a target odor:
🌿 ANISE 🌿
Odor will be attached to a "cache" where treasures and tokens will be waiting to be discovered, this is the human enrichment side of things. Who doesn't love trinkets?!

Using:
📍 Coordinates
🧩 Clues & hints
👃 Their nose
🐾 Teamwork with their handler

Think:
🐕 Scent work
🥾 Outdoor adventure
🧠 Mental enrichment (Dog & Human)
🗺️ Treasure hunt energy
🔥 Real-world problem solving

I’m currently building Geoscenting with the goal of having it LIVE by the END OF NEXT MONTH.

Which means you can start preparing NOW by introducing your dog to ANISE odor detection work at home 👀

This is being designed for:
✔️ Pet dogs
✔️ Sport dogs
✔️ High energy dogs
✔️ Nervous dogs needing confidence
✔️ Dogs that need more purpose and enrichment

Future plans include:
🌲 Outdoor missions, possibly water missions
🏅 Achievement levels
📸 Team submissions
🎯 Detection challenges
👥 Community events
🧭 Progressive searches from beginner to advanced

Honestly, I’m ridiculously excited for this one.
If your dog would absolutely LOVE this kind of activity, drop a 👃 below so I know who wants updates as development continues!

Or at least, follow our page for updates. 😊

Do you like finding hidden treasures??? 🪙 👀🐾

Imagine going on real outdoor “missions” with your dog.
Not just obedience.
Not just walks.
Not just another dog class.

I’ve been quietly working on an idea that combines:
🌲 Adventure
🧭 Exploration
🐕 Scent work
🧠 Problem solving
🏕 Environmental confidence
🤝 Real teamwork between dog and handler

Think:
🔍 Hidden caches
🗺 Search missions
🌲 Outdoor challenges
🐾 Finding things with your dog
🧭 Working through real environments together

The goal isn’t just to “train” your dog.
The goal is to give dogs PURPOSE.
To let them use their brain.
To let them hunt.
To let them solve problems.
To create healthier, more fulfilled dogs through structured adventure.

And to keep it fun for the hooomans too.

This could be AMAZING for:
✔ High energy dogs
✔ Nervous or reactive dogs that need an "adjacent activity"
✔ Working breeds
✔ Dogs that need more mental enrichment
✔ Owners wanting a fun hobby with their dog
✔ People who love hiking, exploring, and learning new things
✔️ Kiddos wanting to learn more about dog training and dog sports

There may eventually be:
🎖 Beginner missions
🌲 Wilderness searches
🏙 Urban challenges
📦 Hidden caches
🧭 Seasonal events
🏅 Progression levels
👣 Team-based adventures

This would be a community building activity but introvert friendly and GREAT as a Homeschool activity.

Still in development… but I’m curious 👀

If your dog would LOVE something like this, comment: a picture of your dog's "game face." ☺️

One of the most important components of successful training: clear expectations and communication.

How your dog comes to an "understanding" is not as important as the understanding itself.

Unclear communication and unclear expectations expose holes.

Learn how to effectively communicate your expectations to your dog and I promise you, it would make a WORLD of difference.

Our sport dogs can do weight pull in one breath and a focussed heel the next. They can also aggress in one breath, and be a social butterfly in the next.

Dogs understand far more than we realize, we are just waiting for science to catch-up. ❤️

We will miss Dewy man!!

I am utterly grateful to his family for allowing me to Groom him. He was a fun spunky man with a radiant red coat. ❤️

He was very loved. ❤️‍🩹

Mogni, one of the Josie's Misfit Ranch GSD puppies.
He is casually working on Pet Tracking.

This was a completely unplanned spur of the moment track. And the first time our son tagged along for the whole ride. I cut out alot to save you from a 15+ minute video and more of my crappy camera skills. 🤣

Our target scent is fur from the grooming salon, it's perfect for the purpose and at this level of training. We added some moisture as this was OLD fur that was left outside in the elements. It was left over from an older track and I just decided to throw it in the truck and use it.

I'm so mesmerized everytime I see Mogni reach his "flow state" while in scent. He changes from happy go lucky to seriously on a mission. ☺️

Were building search conditions/lengths/aging/alert behavior etc and hopefully he will have a future helping the community. 🤞

I'm sure one of our Malinois wouldn't mind helping out either. ❤️

Mogs is so much fun! I can't express how happy we are to have him as a part of our family!

A fun creative groom by Ariana on Dexter the Corgi. ❤️
Corgis are just so much fun, all the way around.

We also have color options as long as you chat with one of the Groomers ahead of time for a color "consult."

If you'd like to book with Ariana you can do so by visiting this link and clicking on her picture. 😊 https://www.thecompletek9.org/grooming

She grooms Sundays for anyone needing weekend appointments.

I'm so thankful to have her on our team!!

Using Treats 🥩 in the Grooming Salon 🛁 (and Actually Getting Results)

If you’re a groomer trying to use treats to make dogs more successful in your salon, there’s a right way to do it… and a way that just turns into chaos and crumbs everywhere.

Let’s make it useful.
Start with a baseline.

Ask owners:

What treats does your dog LOVE? ❤️
Are there situations where they refuse food? 🚗

That second question matters more than people think.

If a dog won’t take food in certain situations, that tells you exactly where stress starts to override motivation.

Use the right treats.

This is not the place to “build food drive.” You don’t have time for that mid-groom.

Go high value 🥓
Go small 🤏
Go soft and easy to chew 🦷

You want fast reps, not a dog chewing a jerky strip while you’re trying to trim nails.

Pair it with a marker system.

If the dog doesn’t understand why it’s getting a treat, you lose half your power. A simple “yes” or click before the treat tells the dog exactly what behavior earned it.

There are tons of great marker training resources on YouTube if you haven’t explored this yet.

Contain your rewards.

Don’t be that groomer digging through pockets mid-chaos.

👍 Treat pouch
👍 Bowl just out of reach
👍 Or my favorite: a small craft bucket hanging on a rolling IV stand
It moves with you from tub to table and becomes a visual target for the dog.

Dogs move toward rewards. Use that.
If you want the dog facing forward… put the reward forward.

If you want stillness… reward stillness.

This is essentially the “bucket game” / source focus idea:

Only mark and reward when the dog is:

1️⃣ Being successful
2️⃣ AND oriented toward the reward

You’ll start to see the dog choose better positions.
Think in pictures.

You get more of what you reward.

Bouncy, chaotic dog → reward calm, still moments.

Shut down, low-energy dog → reward small signs of confidence

You’re shaping behavior in real time.

🛑 If a dog won’t take treats, pay attention.
That’s information, not failure.

Usually it means:

☝️ Stress is rising
☝️ Or the dog is already full

When food refusal shows up, assume stress is stacking.
Work with the nervous system, not against it.

Dogs bounce between:

🔴 Sympathetic (fight/flight, high stress)
🟢 Parasympathetic (rest/digest, calm and learning-ready)

We want to nudge them toward parasympathetic whenever possible.

One easy trick: If a dog is nervous at check-in, do a quick treat scatter on the floor.

Let them sniff and search.

That simple action can help shift their brain out of panic mode and into something more exploratory and calm.

You can also use lick mats, but let’s be honest… they get messy fast.

Keep reps high, treats tiny.

You want a LOT of successful moments.

Choose treats that:
🟢 Are easy on the stomach
🟢 Can be given frequently

Because sometimes… you will absolutely give more than you planned.

And finally, be realistic.

Not every dog will take treats in a salon environment. It’s loud, unfamiliar, and overwhelming.

Grooming still has to get done.

Just stay aware of:
🚨 Trigger stacking
🚨 Stress accumulation

🚦 Elderly dogs, young dogs, and dogs with pain or underlaying health issues will be more prone to stress accumulation. Give ample breaks to these dogs.

When to push forward vs. when to pause and reset
If you want to level this up even more, spend some time learning about shaping in dog training.

It will completely change how you see behavior during grooming.

Better grooming isn’t just about technique.
It’s about understanding the dog in front of you, and using every tool available to help them succeed.

Another day, another dog watching TV. 🤣
Murphy loved watching the action, his sister Bella however, just wanted to gaze into her groomers eyes every second she could. 🤣

Groomers, this is your sign to add a TV to your salon!
