Do cats naturally eat plants? 🌿
My three indoor cats love spending time among the greenery in their balcony catio. Their favorites include cat grass, catnip, catmint, spider plants, olive leaves and cat-safe palms.
Although cats are obligate carnivores, nibbling greenery can be a natural behavior. Cat-safe plants may provide roughage, sensory stimulation and environmental enrichment—but every plant should be correctly identified first.
I choose organically grown, pesticide-free plants, seeds and soil whenever my cats will have access to them. Remember that “organic” does not always mean completely pesticide-free, so it is important to verify how each plant was grown and treated.
Always avoid lilies and sago palms around cats. Sources and references from Cornell Feline Health Center, ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center and VCA Animal Hospitals are included on the final slide.
