First milk test in the books. And it’s record breaking for us. Number one is GardenHome Lights Out! who gave just a hair under 24 lbs of milk and just a hair under 4% butterfat. 23.9 and 3.95 to be exact. We always have called her our cow goat and she is proving it in the milk bucket.

Number two was GardenHome Pfiz who gave a respectable 18.8 lbs milk and a whopping 4.45% butterfat (remember these are Saanens- they don’t often give fat in the 4’s).

Pictured in their very late season barn clothes here. We only have three other milkers. And all are first fresheners so we are still waiting on udder development since they recently kidded. But so far so good.

The exciting thing is we did a magical breeding this year combining Lights’ son and Pfiz and got a beautiful buck kid. We thought we were going to retain him but I don’t think we can. So we are making him available. Contact me if interested.

Usually a goat kid comes out all legs and silliness. Standing is complicated with those long Saanen legs and their only drive in life is to eat. So it can take a bit to see what they actually will look like. But when they come out and we take a breath of surprise at what we see as their potential right away it’s a nice feeling. Pfiz just gave us three extra large, beautiful kids. Two boys and a girl. We are retaining the girl, but the boys have buck potential all over them.

This is the dream team- offspring of GardenHome Pfiz- 2x Best Doe In Show, VEEE90, high milk producer at 19 lbs last year, bred with our own GardenHome Highlight- son of GardenHome Lights Out! (high milk last year of 21 lbs), and Tempo Passa Entranced (half brother to Tempo Passa Etroilee, 2021 National Champion). These boys are big like their grandmother and beautifully correct like their mother with super wide hips and long as a freight train. They won’t just bring a pretty look to your herd but wil knock it out of the park with milk production.

We are that tiny farm tucked up in the corner of the country that most breeders have never heard of. But we are that special gem in that we have big name genetics, we know what we want to breed for, and our animals don’t require a mortgage payment.

We already have some amazing kids on the ground. We are keeping very few this year because we have to stay tiny and we want to grow out some of our first fresheners.

A couple of years ago we brought in a “fancy” buck from Tempo Passa. This year we get a sneak peak at what those udders look like. So far, really good.

We kept a buck kid out of him and our doe, Lights. His full brother went off to be a herd sire at Caprikorn Dairy based on outstanding DHIA numbers. We repeated that breeding this year. We will keep the girl Lights gave us but the two boys would make excellent buck prospects.

Pfiz is that all around smoothly blended, hard working doe who has no problem outcompeting all other breed champions and taking home Best Doe in Show. Her DHIA numbers are darn good as well.

We are looking forward to seeing how our Vineyard View girl, Uki Uki, bred to Entranced, our Tempo Passa buck, turns out. All pedigrees are listed on our Facebook farm page here someplace.

Our ultimate breeding direction is to blend the conformation strengths of Pfiz with the large, Holstein-like qualities of Lights. By breeding Pfiz’s daughter Prosecco to the Lights buck that we kept out of her last year, we feel we are heading that way. As a first freshener she gave us two boys. We will for sure repeat that breeding next year looking for a girl.

Many of our genetics are Vineyard View and Tempo Passa- two names in the Saanen world that stand regularly at the top of the class. We have been so grateful to have access to those genetics. But we are not breeding to look like them. We are taking those qualities and building our own goat. A dairy goat whose name “dairy” comes first.

We don’t show very often anymore but Pfiz takes the cake when we finally trot her out. Winning Best Doe in Show in two consecutive years against some of the northwest’s biggest breeders, Pfiz knows how to bring it in the show ring as well as the milk bucket. High production of 19 pounds is nothing to sneeze at especially when her LA scores her a respectable VEEE 90.

Our newest herd sire is of our own breeding. Introducing GardenHome Highlight.
At GardenHome Farm we strive for excellence in all aspects of goats. We know what we want and what we are breeding for. We believe that a good milk goat should ultimately reach the ideal of a good milk cow- big, productive beyond belief, stretchy and pliable skin, and an ability to put it all in the bucket with little held back. This is not always what a judge looks for and often won’t make for the top show winner. But we like to build from the business backend first. After all “dairy” is in the name. One of our does clicks those buttons especially- GardenHome Lights Out!
Because of these attributes we retained a son out of her last year.

Lights Out! deserves the exclamation mark on the end of her name. Hitting a high mark this summer of 22 pounds she is serious about producing milk. With an ME of 5049 her potential is higher than what we have pushed her for. And she doesn’t lose it in the butterfat either with consistent high 3’s and even into 4 percents, her milk is sweet and rich. Certainly numbers you want to see in a production line.
