While routine spays were historically not recommended for Guinea pigs, thoughts are changing as recent alternative surgical approaches have been implemented and more is being learned about reproductive disease in the species.
“An elective spay in healthy guinea pigs can serve several purposes: it reduces the risk of developing reproductive disease, provides effective contraception, and is technically easier to perform and less likely to involve complications in the absence of pathology,” Dr. Mariana Sosa Higareda explains.
