‼️‼️THE RURAL ANIMAL CRISIS — PART ONE‼️‼️
Tonight, we need to talk about something bigger than one puppy.
This morning, we asked our community to help us raise $425 for a puppy who had been abandoned without food or water.
He was dehydrated. He was anemic. Fleas had ravaged his little body so badly that his skin was bleeding. When he was finally bathed, the water ran red.
You showed up.
As of tonight, you have raised $466 for his care.
You exceeded our goal.
And we cannot thank you enough.
But while everyone was rallying around one little puppy, the rest of his story was still unfolding.
This afternoon, his surviving littermates were found.
Another dog had starved to death.
And the puppies were so hungry, so desperate to survive, that they had begun eating its body.
We aren’t telling you that to shock you.
We’re telling you because something has to change.
This is not one horrible story.
This is not one irresponsible owner.
This is not one rescue having a particularly bad week.
THIS IS A CRISIS.
Across East Texas and rural communities like ours, the animal welfare system is being stretched beyond what it was ever equipped to handle.
There are too many animals.
Too many unplanned litters.
Too little access to affordable spay/neuter and veterinary care.
Families struggling financially.
Animals being abandoned.
Neglect.
Not enough accountability.
Huge rural areas with limited animal control and law-enforcement resources.
Shelters are full.
Rescues are full.
Fosters are full.
And the animals keep coming.
Then someone calls a rescue and says:
“Can you please just take one more?”
We desperately need people to understand what saying YES actually means.
LET LOVE LIVE IS A NONPROFIT.
There is no endless pool of money waiting behind the scenes.
Every animal we accept becomes a responsibility.
Food.
Vaccinations.
Testing.
Spay or neuter.
Parasite treatment and prevention.
Medication.
Veterinary care.
Supplies.
Transportation.
Housing.
Sometimes emergency treatment.
Sometimes months of medical care.
And behind every one of those animals are actual human beings doing the work.
Let Love Live has a small handful of incredibly dedicated staff who work their tails off.
We have a small but mighty group of fosters who continue opening their homes.
They drive.
They clean.
They medicate.
They lose sleep.
They rearrange their lives.
They show up again and again.
But they are human.
Their capacity has limits, too.
We need more people willing to step up.
And just as importantly, we need people willing to stay when it gets hard.
Because rescue gets hard.
WE CANNOT RESCUE OUR WAY OUT OF THIS.
We can save this litter.
We can treat this puppy.
We can raise another $425.
We can find another foster.
But unless something changes upstream, another litter will eventually take their place.
That’s the ripple effect.
An animal isn’t altered.
A litter is born.
Those puppies grow up.
Another litter follows.
Someone can’t afford care.
An animal gets given away or abandoned.
A shelter fills.
A rescue fills.
A foster home fills.
Animal control has nowhere left to place another dog.
And somewhere down a rural road, another animal waits until somebody notices.
We need prevention.
We need accessible spay and neuter.
We need education.
We need responsible ownership and accountability.
We need better resources.
We need fosters.
We need dependable volunteers.
We need adopters.
We need donations.
We need people willing to advocate for animals in their own communities.
And we need people to understand that donating IS rescue.
Fosters give us space.
Volunteers give us hands.
Adopters create capacity.
Donations make the care possible.
Spay and neuter helps prevent the next emergency.
Take away one piece and the entire system backs up.
Today, you raised $466 for one puppy.
That matters.
That puppy matters.
These surviving puppies matter.
Their mother mattered.
And the animals we haven’t met yet matter, too.
So tonight marks a turning point for us.
Over the coming weeks, we’re going to show you more than the emergencies.
We’re going to show you why they keep happening.
We’re going to talk about the money.
The foster shortage.
Spay and neuter.
Rural animal control.
Owner responsibility.
Veterinary access.
The people behind rescue.
The difficult decisions.
And what actually has to happen if we want fewer animals to reach us like this.
Not because we want you to feel hopeless.
Because we need you to become part of the solution.
Tonight, these babies are safe.
Others aren’t.
And change is going to take all of us.
East Texas, it’s time to step up.
