It’s national dog bite prevention week, if only that were every week!

During my many years working with kids and teaching dog safety, I heard a lot of myths passed on as far as the best way to interact with dogs. One of those was that you should approach the dog and put your hand out for him to sniff.
Bad advice! If the dog is afraid, isn’t feeling well, or doesn’t want anyone in his space for whatever reason, you just placed your hand in front of his defense mechanism, ie his teeth.

I always told the kids that if they want to pet a dog they need to not only ask the owner for permission, but also the dog. Dogs may not be able to speak verbally like we do, but they can certainly let us know how they feel about things. If the dog wants to interact with you he will come closer. So you can ask the dog if he wants to spend time with you and wait for him to let you know. Much safer than approaching a dog who doesn’t want you to come close!

Incidents like this are so easily prevented. This could have ended badly. I am never shy about being really preachy about leashes. Your dog is too precious to take chances with. Simply put, if you can't call your dog off a hot pursuit it needs to be on a leash. Again, IF YOU CAN'T CALL YOUR DOG OFF A HOT PURSUIT IT NEEDS TO BE ON A LEASH. There is no shame in leashing your dog. It's called being responsible.
