🪿🪿DUCK-DATE (update) on our duck surgical patient! Her leg is healing well. She can now have supervised shallow water time. The goal being to let the water support some of her weight so she can move the leg gently and stay cleaner, without keeping the pins fully underwater. Our veterinary team decided to keep the pin in for another week. We will recheck x-rays next week and hopefully remove or partially remove the pin then.

Why Is My Bird Puffed Up? 🪿🦴 This 5 year old female pekin duck presented for surgery to treat a left femur fracture. As you can see, radiographs confirm a severely displaced mid-shaft femoral simple oblique fracture.

❣️We performed surgery to place an intramedullary pin and external fixator (what you see pictured in bandage) to keep the pin stable and in place while the bone is healing. The patient did well in the procedure and was eating right away in recovery!

❤️‍🩹 The patient was put on pain medication and antibiotics while healing. She will be on strict rest and restraint and will come back for repeat x-rays in 2 weeks to assess her healing. If successful, eventually the pin will be removed and she will live a mostly normal rest of her life. :)

▫️This 2 year old female gecko presented for decreased appetite. Her physical exam showed she was a little tense in her abdomen, suspicious of reproductive tract enlargement (follicles/eggs), amongst other possibilities. Bloodwork indicated active inflammatory or infections process. Later on the client approved ultrasound for a better idea of what may be going on in there! 🩻

▫️Ultrasound findings were consistent with follicular stasis along with concerns for an enlarged liver. We recommended surgery to remove her ovarian tissue and follicles, along with a liver biopsy for further diagnosis.

▫️The owner elected for surgical removal of her ovaries (ovariectomy) however declined the liver biopsy. She did well for surgery and recovery. We will continue to monitor her bloodwork and appetite and see if she improves. 🙏🏼
