Exotics deserve preventive care too! The giant leaf-tailed gecko 🦎 is a species endemic to Madagascar. They are nocturnal, forest-dwelling lizard and clearly camouflage is their strong suit. They can grow up to a foot long!

🍃 Fringed flaps on the gecko’s sides and lower jaws flatten against a surface, obscuring their outline. This helps camouflage them even more. They spend their time on the side of trees, hiding and eating a variety of insects and snails. 🐌

☎️ If disturbed, they open their jaw wide to show their bright red mouth and emit a loud distress call.

🦝 Raccoons are such cute animals! But should they be kept as pets? Let’s look at the facts.

🦷 Unpredictable and nocturnal behavior. Raccoons will retain their wild instincts. They will bite, scratch, and may become defensive and territorial. If a raccoon bites someone, it must be reported to DNR and they will likely euthanize the animal due to life-threatening rabies risk. They are also most active at night which may conflict with a household’s routine.

🧠 Extremely curious and destructive. Raccoons need to investigate every cabinet, door, container, lock, etc. Digging, climbing, shredding, tearing things apart is normal behavior.

🦠 Virus and Parasite Risks. Raccoons can carry rabies and commonly carry raccoon roundworm, both of which can be caught by and risk fatality in humans.

🩺 Specialized Vet Care. We have folks drive from hours and states away because their raccoon is having a medical emergency and no veterinary care available.

🍎 Diet. Unfortunately, due to their slow metabolism as scavengers that may not eat every day in the wild, we see an extremely high rate of obesity in captive raccoons.

🏠 Enclosure. Raccoons need large, secure, enriched spaces with opportunities to climb, dig, forage, swim, and hide. A typical home cannot adequately meet their needs.

Loving wildlife does not mean owning it. Respect their needs!

Chameleons are NOT beginner reptiles — and here’s why.

☀️ Proper UVB lighting, basking gradient temperatures, enough heat AND a way to thermoregulate. They need ventilation, climbing opportunities, foliage, and space.

🐛 Diet is a two-step process. They need a variety of bugs you actually need to “gut-load” BEFORE they can be fed to your chameleon to make sure they are nutrient dense.

😨They’re easily stressed. They generally are not pets you constantly pick up and handle. 🩺 They HIDE illness. They will not show obvious signs until they are very sick.

🥚Females need specific nest box sites when laying eggs, and you may not know when. If they do not have a proper place they are comfortable to lay, they may become egg-bound and require emergency surgery.

Do your research before getting this pet. Book an appointment with an exotic pet specialist to review your husbandry. Schedule regular wellness exams to prevent and catch disease early.

🦎This bearded dragon presented for a dental cleaning. He had significant black tartar build up with lingering chronic inflammation, likely associated with dental disease. We performed the dental cleaning and this beardie is back to having a bright, healthy smile! 🦎

🦷Regular dental care is very important for bearded dragons. Because of their unique jaw anatomy, they can easily develop infection. Providing crunchy vegetables, such as dandelion greens or kale, along with regular dental checks can help to prevent these issues and keep your beardie healthy.
