A Mosaic Merle is a genetic phenomenon in dogs where an individual has different versions (alleles) of the merle gene in different cells of their body. This occurs when the merle gene mutates or "shortens" during embryonic development. The timing of this mutation determines the dog's coat, which often results in tweed or minimal merle visual patterns.Because mosaic dogs contain a mix of cell types, they can produce offspring with unexpected merle patterns or varying merle alleles. Why the Genetics MatterAllele Mix: A mosaic dog typically carries more than two merle alleles across their body's cells.Variable Phenotype: The visual appearance of the coat (phenotype) is highly unpredictable because it depends entirely on which alleles ended up in which skin cells.Breeding Risks: Breeding two merle dogs together can lead to "double merle" offspring, which are heavily prone to severe health issues such as deafness and blindness. Because mosaicism can affect reproductive cells (gonadal mosaicism), it is crucial for breeders to conduct genetic testing through services like the Laboklin Merle Test, UC.DAVIS Merle test to avoid breeding high-risk puppies.

A red dog will actually appear visually darker when they are in the shade. This happens because the shade removes the harsh, brightening effects of direct sunlight. Without that bright light washing out the coat, your eye perceives the true depth of the red pigment, making it appear richer and darker
