Does a wagging tail always mean a dog is happy? 🐾

Not necessarily. Jack’s tail is moving, but it is held high and stiff, his body is tense, and his hackles are raised.

A tail wag is only one piece of the picture. When reading dog body language, look at the whole dog—posture, movement, facial expression, tail position, and the situation around them.

Can your pup come when you call—even when they can’t see you? 🐾

Wally is practicing outdoor recall on a long line. Mom is initially out of view near the shed, but he responds to her cue, comes across the yard, rounds the corner, and returns to her.

Recall is built through lots of successful practice in different setups and environments. The long line keeps the exercise controlled while Wally gets repetitions making the choice to come back.

Can your pup notice another dog and still check back in with you? 🐾

At graduation, Oona sees another dog passing by in the park, then quickly reconnects with Mom and gets reinforced for that choice.

For a dog working through reactivity, moments like this matter. The goal is not to pretend the trigger is not there—it is to help the dog notice it and still stay able to think, disengage, and reconnect.

Marty is practicing impulse control from a sit—learning that staying composed can be part of getting what he wants.
