Rainy Days at Old Stonehouse Farm

There’s something about a rainy day on the farm that makes you slow down just enough to notice what’s happening around you.

Outside, the rain falls steadily across the fields and gardens. The tomatoes glisten on the vine, the sweet corn lifts its leaves toward the sky, and the pastures seem to turn a deeper shade of green right before your eyes. What looks like a dreary day to some is really a day of growing.

The crops don’t mind the rain.

Neither do the gardens.

They simply soak it in.

And while the rain does its work outside, there’s usually work of another kind happening inside the old stone house.

The kitchen gets warm. The oven gets turned on. Maybe there’s bread rising on the counter, muffins baking, cookies cooling on an old tray, or a pot simmering slowly on the stove. The windows fog a little from the warmth inside while raindrops wander down the glass.

Those are some of my favorite farm days.

Because farming isn’t always sunshine, tractors running through fields, or baskets overflowing with harvest. Sometimes farming is simply waiting and trusting.

Trusting the rain to do what we cannot.

Trusting tiny seeds beneath the soil.

Trusting that the work we did yesterday will become something tomorrow.

There’s a lesson in that.

Not every productive day has to be busy.

Some days are meant for growing quietly.

So we’ll let the rain fall over Old Stonehouse Farm today. Let it soak into the gardens, settle the dust, fill the ground and nourish everything we’ve planted.

And inside, we’ll keep the kitchen warm.

Because around here, even a rainy day is part of the harvest.

Homegrown and homemade.
Rain or shine.
That’s life at Old Stonehouse Farm.

“Advice from a sunflower. Be bright, sunny, and positive. Know your roots. Spread seeds of happiness. Rise, shine, and hold your head up high. Keep on growing. Even on the darkest days, stand tall and find the sunlight.” –Unknown
