I MATTER MONDAY! Meet Lyra
Lyra carries a scattering of stars across her body. Tiny white markings known as Birdcatcher spots appear throughout her coat, with several forming a pattern remarkably similar to the Lyra constellation. She is hilarious and wonderful to be around, and most days, you can hear her before you can see her! In fact, yesterday, she spent most of the afternoon squealing at overly flirty geldings, then running around her pasture with what we can only describe as a loud battle cry. She also LOVES water and if she could trade her hooves for flippers she'd be ocean bound in a heartbeat! Lyra is loud, opinionated, funny, and full of personality....and when we met her, she was standing in an auction crawling with kill buyers.
We don't know where she came from or how she ended up at the auction, but we do know that she arrived lame and in pain. It's difficult not to wonder whether that was all it took for someone to let her go. Perhaps Lyra had spent years as a riding horse before pain made her unable to continue. Perhaps the moment she could no longer perform the job expected of her, someone decided her life was no longer worth protecting. We may never know exactly what happened, but the situation is painfully familiar. Horses enter the slaughter pipeline every day when injury, age, or illness changes what they can do for people. Their years of companionship and service are forgotten, while their worth is reduced to soundness, productivity, or price. Thankfully for Lyra, she's safe now and ready to find her a true forever home where she can scream and splash to her heart's content.
