When a horse isn’t doing what you’re asking, or worse, objecting violently, it’s always frustrating to sort out whether the issue comes from training, personality, pain, or other disease. As our diagnostics and understanding of horses advances, it’s worth considering what the horse is trying to tell us, and think about how we can listen.

Pain from the gastrointestinal tract, teeth, and along the neck and back can all present similarly with objectionable behavior, since the horse often does not have another way to express discomfort in these areas.

Teasing pain vs. behavioral training issues can start as simple as trials with pain killing or anti-anxiety drugs, but can also include orthopedic workup, diagnostic imaging, and blood work. Whatever level we start at, we are happy to talk to you about your concerns and help guide what the next steps are.

Included, a picture of my own project that I’ve been trying to figure out an answer to this exact question on. We go through it too!

Congratulations to Peter Radue for being recognized by his alma mater, the University of Georgia, for his years of dedication to improving the lives of horses, and their owners and caretakers.

And for all of his teaching the many future vets who have been lucky enough to ride along with him, myself included, and see firsthand how you can combine experience with a persistent pursuit of knowledge and self-improvement.

A very well deserved award!
