Meet Shug!

Shug is a sassy and sweet 15yr old sorrel Quarab mare who has been part of our veterinary practice’s breeding program as a recipient mare.

She has served us well, and is now retired from being a recipient mare. We would love to find her a good long-term home where she can have a new purpose and plenty of attention.

Because she has primarily been used as a broodmare/recipient mare, we are not representing her as a trained riding horse. She has been worked in the round pen with a saddle on her and has gone over poles, so we suspect she’s had some training at some point in her life. She is well desensitized, handles new experiences nicely, and is excellent for the farrier.

🔬No more waiting days for lab results! We now offer in-house PPID testing with same-day results, helping us identify disease sooner and make treatment decisions faster.

-Cushing's Disease, otherwise known as PPID (Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfuncion) is common in middle-aged and older horses, and it can be present before obvious signs develop.

-Early signs are often subtle, including muscle loss, decreased performance, abnormal sweating, delayed shedding, or changes in body condition.

-PPID can increase the risk of laminitis, especially when insulin dysregulation is also present.

-Testing can help identify the disease earlier, before more serious complications occur.

-Early treatment and management can improve quality of life, comfort, energy level, and overall health.

-Results can guide medication, diet, grazing, and monitoring recommendations for each individual horse.

-Testing is especially important for horses with recurrent laminitis, unexplained muscle loss, abnormal hair coat, or other age-related changes.

🐴Don’t wait for the curly coat. PPID can be present for years before the classic signs appear, and early testing gives us an opportunity to manage the disease before complications such as laminitis develop.
