🐾 When a Routine Spay Turns Into a Lifesaving Surgery 🐾

This is a pretty incredible case, and a great example of why we’re so thankful for the veterinarians caring for our patients at Mounds Veterinary Clinic. ❤️

A cat recently came in for what was expected to be a routine spay with Dr. Teri Stacy. During the procedure, Dr. Stacy noticed something that didn’t look right with the intestines. What she was seeing appeared to be the beginning of an intussusception, a serious condition where one portion of the intestine begins to slide into another.

Knowing this can be associated with a linear foreign body, Dr. Stacy stopped, contacted the owner, explained what she had found, and received permission to investigate further.

What she discovered was definitely unexpected—a very long tapeworm, several inches in length, acting as a linear foreign body and causing problems within the intestinal tract.

Dr. Stacy had to make two separate incisions into the intestines (enterotomies) to safely remove it all.

Without it being discovered, this kitty could have become critically ill…and potentially died within the following days.

Thankfully, Dr. Stacy recognized the problem early, took action, and this sweet cat is now doing well post-op! ❤️🐱

And there’s an important lesson in this unusual case:

🪱 Tapeworms are commonly transmitted when cats ingest infected fleas.
That means flea prevention isn’t just about stopping itching…it can also help prevent intestinal parasites and the complications they may cause.

We’re incredibly proud of Dr. Teri Stacy for her attention to detail and for turning what began as a routine procedure into a potentially lifesaving one.

Sometimes it’s what you weren’t expecting to find that makes all the difference. ❤️

Did you know that growing up, it wasn’t unusual to look out in our backyard and see a camel, kangaroo, capybara, coatimundi, buffalo, llama, emu, rhea, blackbuck antelope, four-horn sheep, or even a hedgehog?

Kirk and I had no idea that we had a truly exceptional childhood. Who has a kangaroo, camel, buffalo, zebra, capybara, jerboa,  hedgehog, coatimundi as a pet!?! My brother and I…???

Dr. Randy Sohl had a passion for animals that extended far beyond dogs and cats. While there were two rules at our house…no monkeys and no meat-eaters…our home was often filled with bottle babies that needed around-the-clock feedings and care. If an animal needed help, there was a good chance it would find its way to our family. The reason for the rules was for the safety of my brother and I. Monkeys could carry diseases that humans could get/they had feelings that could cause them to hurt us dangerously. Meat eaters could hurt us for obvious reasons.

And at Mounds Veterinary Clinic, the variety didn’t stop there. Over the years, Dr. Sohl cared for everything from family pets to some truly extraordinary patients, including bear cubs, monkeys, large cats, camels, kangaroos, reptiles, exotic birds, and countless other unique species.

For our family, this wasn’t unusual…it was just life. Looking back now, we realize how incredibly special those experiences were. They shaped our love for animals and gave us memories that few people ever get to experience.
